Herodotus tells a story about the Lydian King, Candules, who is obcessed with the beauty of his wife and compels one of his commanders, gyges, to view her naked. “look to your own things only.” Watches wife disrobe. Gives him an ultimatum: “ The king has dishonored me. You may choose to kill him and take me as your wife – or you yourself will be executed.” Kills king and replaces him on the throne Voyeurism: sexual gratification; Ta Nomizomena: The things that are belived to be right Humans are drawn to look at another The gods are always dangerous Tantalus feasts with the gods and brings back some for mortals. Punishment is hades Satyr, Marsyas, says that he is a better harpist than apollo. He’s flayed alive. Cadmus remind penetheus of the faith that came to his cousin, Actaeon. Said he was a greater hunter than Artemis. Pentheus is left to decide if Dionysus is really a god or not. Dionysus seduces Pentheus playing upon his sexual fantasies about the activities of the maenads. So infatuated is Pentheus so willing to abandon what is his own, that he takes off his male costume and allows himself to be dressed as a woman to spy on the other women undetected. (he does not succeed) Dionysus’ intention is to punish, not to educate. He puts Pentheus at the top of a tall pine tree where he is able to gaze on the women and most easily seen.
