How to go from active to passive voice and vice versa.

Active to passive:

The nurse advised the patient to stop smoking.

1. Start sentence with “object”. The patient… 2. Add “be” in same tense as The patient was… main verb. 3. Change main verb to past The patient was advised… participle. 4. Delete or move the subject The patient was advised to stop smoking (by the nurse). to the end of the sentence and add: by+subject. Note: In general, prepositional phrases go at the end (eg. For her, at 3:00pm, at school, in the office, etc.)

Passive to active: 1. Start sentence with the subject (no “by”). 2. Remove the extra, passive “be” verb. 3. Main verb should have the same tense as the “be” verb in passive. 4. Move object to the correct location.

The shin bone was broken (by someone). Someone… Someone was (past simple) … Someone broke…

Someone broke the shin bone.

Practice Exercises: Change the following sentences from passive to active or active to passive. Tip: First start by underlining the main verb, putting a circle around the object and a box around the subject. 1.

The nurse checks the patient’s vital signs every 30 minutes.

The patient’s vital signs are checked every 30 minutes (by the nurse). 2.

The MRI scan detected the torn ligament.

The torn ligament was detected (by the MRI scan). 3.
