Peer Assessments

2 Written Assignment Unit 2: Peer Assessments

Peer assessment is the process of students making evaluative judgements about the work of other students and providing a feedback commentary, usually written (REAP, 2007). University of the People (UoPeople) utilizes peer assessments in two way: discussion responses and written assignment reviews. UoPeople recognizes peer assessments as “a learning activity that challenges you to apply critical thinking as you read and evaluate your peer’s assignment” and therefore chooses to use it as part of their education model (University of the People, n.d.). Peer assessment has benefits for both the assessor and the assessed. The assessor has the opportunity to see the assignment completed from another point of view. Perhaps this student has more knowledge of the subject that the assessor will be able to glean. The student might have a wording or format style that the assessor finds superior to his or her own and would like to emulate in their future academic writings. Either way, the assessor is benefiting from knowledge gained. The student receiving the peer assessment benefits from having feedback from students such as themselves, who may have tips to give. They may feel less pressure receiving feedback from a peer, rather than the instructor as well. In contrast, there can be some challenges to the peer assessment process. Finding a balance between effective feedback, constructive criticism, and motivational praise is a daunting task. Because the person reviewing is at the same learning level as the person being reviewed, it is possible they do not have any tips or other information to add to the feedback. This is challenging for the reviewer, as it’s a requirement that they provide feedback and it’s difficult for the person being reviewed if they aren’t receiving effective feedback. One strategy I will use when reviewing my peers written assignments will be to stick to the grading guidelines given. The feedback form provided by the instructor is very detailed and

helps to keep personal opinion out of the process. I will also focus on making sure that if my feedback contains negative remarks that they are meaningful and try to follow those with a positive remark or helpful tip. To assess discussion assignments, I will follow much the same format. Did the student answer the discussion questions? Is there any feedback, tips, or praise I can give them? There are many benefits to peer assessment, but there are also challenges. To make this type of education model work, students must be open to the process and motivated to be effective reviewers. A successful course that utilizes peer assessment can result in students’ increased critical thinking skills.
