Description

English 1090-018,! Writing Exercise 6: Adjusting for Readers!

By: Liam Chappell! To: Dr. Helene Staveley!

Part A.! Numbers 2, 4 and 5.! #2) The need to communicate with your reader.! In order to communicate with your reader you first have to understand what demographic is reading your work. Depending on the reader you may have to talk about different topics in order to get them to actually read your work. ! #4) The need to be fair and knowledgeable in your writing.! One way to adjust how fair and knowledgable you are in your writing is by knowing what age group you are trying to write to. If you are writing to a younger audience you may have to explain your topic in a more simple manner than if you were to explain your topic to an older more sophisticated audience.! #5) The need to be professional in your writing.! In order to adjust how professional you are in your writing you first need to know who you are writing to. Who you are writing to depends on how professional you have to be, if you were writing to your best friend you may use slang and informal writing but if you were to write an E-mail to your boss or professor you may want to use a more formal/professional way of writing.!

Part B.!

The article on “On the Back of Turtle Island Reads” by Shannon Webb-Campbell creates a sense of audience. Campbell creates a sense of audience by making the reader feel like they are colleagues. When Campbell creates this sense of audience she is making the reader more comfortable when reading it, in doing so the reader wants to keep reading because they feel like that are reading a piece of work that was written by someone they know. Also, since Campbell uses a very familiar/friendly way of writing the reader will attain more of what was read and have a better understanding and a better knowledge of what was written.#...
