Description

We Are Marshall Evaluation

The 2006 film “We Are Marshall”, reviews of a tragic event in 1970 at Marshall University in the small town of Huntington, West Virginia, reel when a plane crash claims the lives of 75 of the school's football players, staff members and boosters. The coach brings his team to the burial site of the fallen and begins his pre-game speech. He quoted in his speech “They’re bigger, faster, stronger, more experienced and on paper, they're just better.” (We Are Marshall) Highlighting the advantages of the other team, while also being honest to his team of their chances of winning. However, following up with the quote “But I want to tell you something that they don't know. They don't know your heart.” (We Are Marshall). The coach believed even in the mist of uncertainty or even when an individual doesn’t believe in oneself. There is still an opportunity to challenge yourself with using the most powerful weapon of all. The human heart and the power of believing. The motive that is portrayed in the speech is to always push forward, when life’s obstacles seem impossible. The setting appeals when they are standing at the burial site of many of the football players. The tone is heartfelt and inspiring, but also depressing due to lost of their past teammates, creating an impact of meaning for the coach’s point of view to portray onto the students, hoping it will encourage the strength within each one of them. In addition, to honor the fallen in their next game. How this speech inspired me was the fact that it did not just convey about a specific sport, but how it conveys it similarities to life itself. To pursue in life’s obstacle, we must be able to look within and summon the strength to keep moving forward. I specifically liked the quote that he says “you've gotta lay that heart on

the line, men. From the souls of your feet, with every ounce of blood you've got in your body, lay it on the line until the final whistle blows” (We Are Marshall). This gave me the inspiration of fighting the hard times. Inspiring to not only fight it, but to learn to embrace it! With every punch you take, the stronger you get. It’s obstacles from life that makes us humans to pursue in getting stronger....
