Reproductive Benefits of Human Cloning o Individual Benefits  Happier and healthier individuals (we wouldn’t clone people disposed to bad mental and physical diseases)  More satisfying child bearing: individuals with desired traits  More satisfying child rearing: using self-knowledge about ourselves  Answer problem for people who suffer from infertility  Children for homosexual couples o Social Benefits  Scientific knowledge: heredity vs. environment debate  Duplication of great talent, genius, etc. (cloning Einstein)



Right to Genetic Uniqueness? o Tooley responds (Does not think we have a right to genetic uniqueness)  Is having identical twins morally permissible?  Nothing wrong with getting pregnant  Cloning is delayed twins  Are there any serious self-regarding interests that cloning threatens?  Not harmed by being / having a clone  Genetically similar world

 Advantage: no genetic diseases (less pain and suffering)  Downside: everyone is a brother and sister (related in a basic way) 

Right to an Open Future? o You discover that your clone is a poor marathon runner o You learn a fact about yourself by observing your clone, as tough as they may be to take  Future is not closed off from observing your clone  If your clone is a bad runner, you learn that you are too and you move on from that fact
