Week 4 Quiz 4

1. Property, power and prestige affect my personal social class in a heavy manner. Those who have a large fancy home or expensive vehicle who work and receive a six-figure salary will tell people that they are very successful and that they have powerful friends and connections. This is true both from a personal perspective and from those who are in a higher social class. I have seen this personally, I have seen people I served with who scrimped and saved their money and only bought what they needed when they got out of the military, they bought a large home and nice car, because they had this persona of being in a high social class, they were able to connect with people who worked those six figure jobs, and they were able to get those jobs themselves. Where I am right now, I am in the middle class, I do not have a job, but I receive VA disability and GI bill payments, my husband is active duty and our income is enough that I do not need to work, and my children attend a good private school.

2. From my perspective the current shift in global stratification is the use of technology. Technology is a fast and reckless growing product and each month there is some sort of new device or app being released. As an individual we can all see different types of things around the world through the use of technology such as satellites, apps like snapchat, Facebook and Instagram. The improvements with smartphones have allowed us to access more research for education, medical needs and information. I believe that this affects the economic and political power of the U.S in a greater manner, with the economic and political power growing the U.S has the power to control air ways as well as the ability to tap into devices to help grow the economy. The U.S is beginning to move towards a more non-bias, inclusive and open society. The use of technology is helping the economic growth by giving access to shopping apps like amazon, Instacart, food delivery and many other types of money making. These types of apps help the economy by bringing an income to businesses which those pay taxes and therefore the economy grows more.

3. In my own honest opinion, I believe that the current economic situation in the U.S will begin to decline when it comes to social mobility and the American Dream. The reason that I believe this to be true is because we have three social classes, the lower class, middle class and high class. All these classes have the same thing in common however, though each of these classes are separated just based off the income they make. Because of income the lower class do not see their future becoming better they believe that they will never be able to rise to middle- or upper-class status. The middle class are working and living paycheck to paycheck just to put food on the table and pay their bills. The upper class seem to just not care about both the classes underneath them. At this rate social mobility becomes almost nonexistent. As far as the American dream is concerned many people have immigrated to the U.S in search for a better life and they soon realize that their dream is not what they thought it would be. Soon the American

dream will become a thing of the past and many people will stay in their own countries in order to have a better life.

4. According to our textbook the Horatio Alger myth is the principle that anyone can in fact advance if both men and women alike try hard enough and it inspires these individuals to strive to get ahead and have a better life. The myth also takes out the responsibility for different failures from society in general. In my honest opinion I believe in this myth due to the fact that I have seen this work in numerous people. I have seen people that were down on their luck working a job that they were slaving over and still not able to pay all their bills start to rise up just due to their dedication to improving their lives. I believe that the strengths and weaknesses of this myth for both men and women alike can both move up their respective social ladders through hard work and determination and that no weakness will remove their will to move forward....
