Description

Ethical Decision-Making Name: Shawnterra Woodard Course: CWV-101 Date: 10/20/2020 Instructor: Mike Richardson For questions 2-6, chose from the "Decision-Making Cases" document in the topic study materials. Use critical thinking as well as support from the topic study materials to answer the following prompts. 1. Why do Christians believe that morality is absolute and objective, rather than relative and subjective? If morality is objective, where do Christians get their moral standard? Cite Chapter 7 of The Beginning of Wisdom textbook and/or topic overview. Include the resources you use on a reference page at the end of this document. Your answer in 75-100 words: Christians believe that morality is absolute and objective, rather than relative and subjective because according to Cosgrove (as cited in Holland & Jibben, 2014) they believe that ethics should be grounded in absolute principles of right and wrong based on the unchanging nature of God as revealed in the bible and through Jesus Christ. Christians get there moral standards from the scripture and through Jesus Christ and his teachings as he is the epitome of the absolute principles of right and wrong. 2. Use the case you chose from the "Decision-Making Cases" document to answer the following questions to build the Christian ethical response. Use logical reasoning (general revelation). Cite Bible passages (special revelation), The Beginning of Wisdom textbook, and/or the topic overview. Include the resources you use on a reference page at the end of this document. a. Which case did you choose? Abortion. After trying for many years, Ruth finally gets pregnant. A blood test confirms that her baby has Down syndrome, and her doctors suggest she abort the fetus. A child with Down syndrome would involve extra care, which could continue for a lifetime. Ruth has a successful career and wants to maintain a healthy balance between her career and family. Yet she feels very uncomfortable with abortion. Knowing that you are learning about the Christian worldview, Ruth wonders what the moral response would be.

b. In Chapter 2 of The Beginning of Wisdom textbook and the Topic 1 Overview, the elements of a worldview (ultimate reality, nature of the universe, humanity, knowledge, ethics, purpose) are presented. In the case you chose, which worldview element is going to be the biggest factor for determining right and wrong in the case you chose? Why? Your answer in 75-100 words: I believe that purpose would stand as the determining character for right and wrong in the case. The human body rather, a fully grown mature adult well into their years or a tiny fetus minutes into formation in the womb are essentially a gift from God, as we are the only creatures created in his image and were given dominion to rule over his creation (Diffey, 2014). When he created humans, he spoke of it as “very good” (Genesis 1:31). It is my belief that each human has a purpose regardless of what our physical features may be. God knew each of us before he formed us in the womb so to discard of a human life because of physical characteristics, I believe, is morally wrong and ultimately an act of rebellion against God. Scripture entails that he explained what dominion looks like: “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it” (Diffey, 2014, para. 37). c. How does the Christian worldview describe the worldview element you identified? Your answer in 75-100 words: The Christian worldview sees the world as a place that often suffers because of morally wrong choices and as a place that misses the good that could have been if the morally right choice would have been made (Holland & Jibben, 2014, para. 43). They also believe that whether a person is of Christian faith or not, that they still have a natural sense of right and wrong because everyone of us are made in God’s rather you believe in him or not. d. What are Bible passages (cite at most three) that will guide the ethics for the case you choose? How do these Bible passages apply to this case? Your answer in 75-100 words: The Bible passages that reflect most closely to this case for me are “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, Before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations (Jeremiah 1:5 KJV). “For I know the plans I have for you declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future (Jeremiah 29:11), and lastly, “Children are a heritage rom the Lord, offspring a reward from him. Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are children born in one’s youth. Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them (Psalm 127: 3-5). All of these resonate with the Christian belief of pro-life. Nowhere in the bible is the word abortion ever mentioned, so simply put, abortion is murder. It is ultimately the killing of another human who is created in God’s © 2020. Grand Canyon University. image. Even in the womb, God sees life and values it. e. Based on your answers to b and c, explain the Christian response to the case you chose. In other words, how might the Christian worldview resolve the issue? Your answer in 75-100 words: Christianity believes in pro-life and that humanity is given and not earned. Only God, the sovereign creator of all things, has the authority to decide when life is a life, but Christians also knows that we are imperfect humans. One might discourage the decision and strive to guide your thoughts on the issue of abortion by evidence and scripture regarding the thoughts and beliefs of why pro-life is the right choice, but Christians also believe in forgiveness, and that guilt and shame can be taken away in the forgiveness offered through Jesus Christ (Holland & Jibben, 2014). 3. Your previous responses built a Christian ethical stance and provided a Christian resolution for the case. How might this Christian resolution to the issue increase human dignity and human value? Your answer in 50-75 words: Laws on abortion restriction are needed in order to increase human dignity and human value because they essentially help to advocate for the lives of the unborn. Government is a God ordained institution, and laws are intended by God to point us to our need of a savior, and to maintain a society that reflects his goodness and justice. (Hough & Sobolik, 2019). 4. The Christian position that humans should flourish comes from belief in the goodness of God. How so? What are the connections between God's goodness and human flourishing? Your answer in 50-75 words: When God finished creating the world, he stated that it was “very Good”. For the Christian worldview, this solidifies that Gods’ intent was for it to flourish, as part of that creation, humans naturally feel the desire to flourish. The connections between God’s goodness and human flourishing is that although humanity fell and suffered greatly, God immediately begin his work of restoring the whole created order to its right relationship to himself (Diffey, 2014, para. 14). A right understanding of biblical flourishing brings us to direct all glory to God. He is glorified when we flourish. 5. Considering the Christian resolution you built for the case and everyone involved in the scenario, what might be some benefits or unintended consequences that come from this resolution? What might be challenging for people to accept or do? Your answer in 75-100 words: Benefits that come from this resolution are that a child will be ultimately given the opportunity to live out their purpose as God intended, a mother will make the hardest

decision of her life by taking on a disabled child and possibly through that child discover a love like no other. She may also discover a more profound relationship with God as her journey begins for her family, it would also be a challenge in the journey of learning, adjusting, and preparing for life with a child with a disability. 6. What are some ways that Christians should be active in helping to alleviate the suffering related to this issue? Give specific examples that ordinary people can do. Your answer in 75-100 words: The goal of Christian life is twofold (Greever, 2014, para. 32). As servants of the Lord, Christians strive to live a life just as Jesus did. This is performed by helping your neighbor and spreading the word of God in the name of Jesus. Somethings Christians can do in regards to this issue include: being active in helping out by supporting mothers and being a listening ear, educating them on their options for the life of their unborn child, volunteering their time or donating to different organizations, helping to establish community based non-profits in your area, and lastly, by raising more awareness on the topic of pro-life.
