Description of Skill Based of the theory that behavior is learned & has consequences. Abnormal behavior results from an attempt to avoid painful feelings.

Indications Clients with anxiety, phobias, substance abuse, addictive disorders, & bipolar disorder.

Outcomes/Evaluation Clients behavior improves after using each of the different types of therapies: Modeling, operant conditioning, systematic desensitization, & aversion therapy.

Potential Complications The client doesn't respond to behavioral therapy. Compulsive behavior doesn't stop. Panic/Anxiety worsens.

CONSIDERATIONS

Nursing Interventions (pre, intra, post) Assess the client's behavior. Reward the client for good behavior. Pair maladaptive behavior with a punishment or unpleasant stimuli to promote a change in behavior.

Client Education Diaphragmatic breathing for a client having a panic attack. When negative thoughts occur, the client can say "stop" and substitute those negative thoughts with positive thoughts.

Nursing Interventions Reassess the client. Use different approaches or different types of behavioral therapies & explore which ones work best for the client.
