NEC2201 – Introduction to Structural Engineering Design Problem Based Learning Examples

1. Problem Statement: General Information: A Three-story steel structure, 30 metres by 16 metres in plan, is shown below (see Figure) with the following given information.

Learning Objectives: After completion of this problem, students should be able to: 

Understand concepts of Load Paths and Tributary Areas.

Learning Resources: 

Lecture Notes on Load Paths and Tributary Area.

Checklist of Design Items: Determine the following: a. Tributary width and tributary area of a typical interior beam, b. Tributary width and tributary area of a typical spandrel or perimeter beam, c. Tributary area of a typical interior girder, d. Tributary area of a typical spandrel girder,

e. Tributary area of a typical interior column, f. Tributary area of a typical corner column, and g. Tributary area of a typical exterior column.

2. Problem Statement: General Information: A two-story steel structure, 10.5 metres by 10.5 metres in plan, is shown below (see Figure) with the following given information.

Checklist of Design Items: 1. Identify the tributary areas for each Beam, 2. Identify the tributary areas for each Column, and 3. Sketch the tributary areas for beams and columns.

3. Problem Statement: Checklist of Design Items: 1. Find area supported by beams on radial girder, and 2. Sketch the tributary areas for beams on radial girder....
