Chapter 11: Physical Development in Middle Childhood ! Physical Growth: Physical growth continues at a steady rate that is established in the preschool years They outgrow shoes more than sweaters, shirts, etc. Girls are more likely to enter puberty toward the end of elemenerty school years Some children are unusually short because their body does not produce enough growth hormone This condition affects 1 in 5000 children and is treated by injecting growth hormone, its called hormone therapy !

Nutrition They need to eat to support their growth and provide energy for their active lives They need a well-balanced diet They need to eat from the food guide (5 food groups) Need to eat breakfast, it's the most important meal of the day Some children do not get enough food to eat because they don’t have time, or their parents can't afford it Lunch and breakfast programs are popular Obesity: the physical state of being 20 percent over ideal body weight, given age and height This can result in low self esteem and not being social or popular A majority of over weight children become over weight adults In addition to lifestyle heredity can play a large role in obesity as well Basel Metabolic Rate: the speed which the body consumes calories

Environment is a huge factor as well We need to emphasise internal signals for when we stop eating !

Tooth Development Tooth loss is a sign of maturity Health of baby teeth can affect the permanent teeth health Regular flossing and brushing can promote healthy oral health Unfortunately parents need to help/do it for their children because they do not yet have the fine motor skills to floss or brush properly !

Vision and Hearing A common sensory disorder is myopia Myopia:! nearsightness The lens projects images of the distant object in front of the retina instead of in it 25% of school children have this More likely to develop myopia is they spend long periods of time reading, looking at a computer or drawing This can easily be fixed with glasses !

Development of Motor Skills Their greater size contributes to their improved motor skills By the time they reach age 11 they can throw three times as far as they could when they were 6 Fine motor skills develop as well; children's dexterity becomes greater and it is evident This fine motor development is visible in hand writing As girls reach puberty they begin to have more fat and less muscle !

Physical Fitness Being active has many benefits for children, it helps promote growth of muscles and bones, promotes cardiovascular health, and helps establish a life long exercise habit Some schools do not include physical activity in their every day which can be hard on the children !

Accidents As they increase in age their more at risk to become injured Parents need to be vigilant about rules like helmets and not crossing busy streets without and adult present Parents can prevent accidents Through programs at school kids learn about the importance of safety...
