College of ECEs What is a profession? - Eight criteria must be met: social necessity, altruism, autonomy, code of ethics, distance from client, standards of practice, prolonged training, and specialized knowledge - Do you think Early Childhood Education is a profession? Criteria - Social necessity-Covid has shown society how important ECE is - Altruism-almost to a fault! This is concern and care for others - Autonomy-this is a work in progress for the College of ECE - Code of ethics-yes we have that! - Distance from client-this is a challenge but it is happening - Standards of practice-yes we have that! - Prolonged training –that is why you are here! - Specialized knowledge-yes! RECE’s are required to update their skills and knowledge In other words-we are getting there What is the College of ECEs? It is NOT a …. - Training institution - it does not replace the community college programs - Professional Association – it does not replace the voice of the AECEO - Union – it does not negotiate employee/employer contract agreements - Advocacy Group – it does not lobby or advocate but does set standards and policies for the profession to practice\Government Ministry – Though the Minister of Education will monitor to make sure the College is accountable and compliant to the act, he/she does not and should not be involved in the operations of the College of ECE. IT IS the professional regulatory body for Early Childhood Educators! Role of the College of ECEs - It is a professional self-regulatory body for ECEs formed to protect the public interest and focus on quality and standards of practice in Early Childhood Education. - Only members can use the title “Early Childhood Educator” or “Registered Early Childhood Educator” to describe themselves of their profession. - The first self-regulatory college for ECEs in Canada! Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice Different Versions Prepared by Different Organizations - The Association of Early Childhood Educators, Ontario (AECEO). - The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). - The Canadian Child Care Federation (CCCF). - The College of Early Childhood Educators of Ontario (CECE). Two Important Terms! - The Code of Ethics stresses ethical standards which apply to professional practice and conduct. - Within this document are The Standards of Practice which set out standards of professional practice and conduct. - Purpose: to serve, to guide, assist and direct the professional practice of College members. What Are Ethics?

-

Ethics simply means doing the right thing. When you care for young children, you come across situations that require ethical resolutions everyday. - A set of standards can help you determine the ethical, professional response to difficult, but common, situations. A Code of Ethics Is… - not a list of solutions to specific problems - a useful guide for how to act as a professional in practical, everyday ways - helpful for ECE Professionals in applying the information to specific situations in child care College’s Code of Ethics - First, the document describe an ECE’s professional responsibilities to these groups: 1. Children 2. Families 3. Colleagues and the Profession 4. Community and Society Also Specifies Standards of Practice - STANDARD I: Caring and Nurturing Relationships that Support Learning - STANDARD II: Developmentally Appropriate Care and Education - STANDARD III: Safe, Healthy and Supportive Learning Environments - STANDARD IV: Professional Knowledge and Competence - STANDARD V: Professional Boundaries, Dual Relationships and Conflicts of Interest - STANDARD VI: Confidentiality and Consent to the Release of Information Regarding Children and their Families So, How Can the Code Be Used in Real-Life Situations - Review the reading on Blackboard to understand Gibb’s cycle in depth. It is one of many models that you can adopt to make decisions. This model is especially helpful when we look at the dilemmas faced by Educators . - Scenario: You are a new graduate who has accepted a position teaching kindergarten-age children at an inner city centre in a low-income area. You have set up learning centres, and things are going well. You are shocked when your supervisor tells you the childrens’ parents are adamant that they don’t want children to “just play.” They expect their children to bring home workbook pages they have completed and expect that kind of homework too. Think it through….. - In your own words, identify what you think is the main concern, issue, or problem in this situation. - To whom do you have responsibilities? Whom and what do you have to consider in making a decision? - What guidance can you find in this section of the Code of Ethics? What specific items in the code are helpful in guiding your decision? - What do you think an early childhood educator should do to best resolve this situation? What action(s) should you take in resolving this situation? Ethical Dilemmas - It is the Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice that should guide is in our field. - It is important that you remember that you will be applying to the College of ECE’s for membership, it is important that you start now understanding how the Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice should guide you.

- We will revisit this next semester Closure - Choose a quote about ethics and morality that will inspire you as you move forward in your career....
