Description

Vocabulary 1. UV Shade- the level of optical protective darkness on welding goggles. 2. Flint lighter- a tool used to create flame sparks through the force of friction of lint and steel. 3. ARC welding – a form of welding in which electrons pass through an electrode and jump to the base metal. 4. Electrode- a conductor used in arc welding to create a path for electrons. 5. Shield gas- a gas used on electrodes which acts as a form of protection to the electrons passing through it to prevent it making contact with oxygen. 6. Acetylene- a fuel originating from warm water and calcium carbide. 7. PPE- Personal Protective Equipment 8. Soldering- A form of welding in which a solder/metal is melted onto the base metal by a torch. 9. Flux- a chemical cleaner used on metals before welding. 10. Check Valve- a valve that normally allows fluid to flow through it in only one direction. 11. Fuse plugs- plugs on the sides of tanks which melt when the temperature reaches 2120 F 12. MAPP gas- a fuel gas based on a stabilized mixture of methylacetylene and propadiene. 13. Electrode holder- a metal clamp which holds the electrode during ARC welding and runs the elctrodes through it. 14. Regulator- a valve with a diaphragm inside which it closes or opens to control pressure. 15. Valve wrench- a special wrench used to open or close an acetylene tank. 16. Butt weld- a type of weld in which two pieces of metal to be joined are in the same plane 17. Oxy-acetylene welding- welding which uses a mixture of acetylene and oxygen to weld. 18. Oxy-hydrogen welding- a welding which uses a mixture of oxygen and hydrogen to weld. 19. Neutral flame- a flame which has a 1:1 ratio of oxygen and actytlene, respectively. 20. Oxidizing flame- a flame which has a 2.5:1 ratio of oxygen and acetylene, respectively.

21. Carburizing flame- a flame which has a...
