Summary

Reflect on your personal health during your first quarter living on campus...

Description

1. Reflect on your wellness wheel. In what areas do you need to be more balanced? How can you move forward to be more balanced? After filling out my wellness wheel it’s very clear to me that I have a serious deficit in the physical and emotional areas. The other areas seem fairly balanced, but physical and emotional are both hardly filled in at all. In order to move forward and be more balanced I need to take steps towards bettering my emotional and physical health such as eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly, and speaking to a counselor at the SMACC. 2. Describe your experience at CWU this quarter. How was your transition to college? Discuss the academic, social, and personal aspects of the transition to college. My experience at CWU this quarter was both positive and negative in many ways. The transition to college was difficult for me, leaving my family behind was a huge change that I wasn’t entirely prepared for. There was a period of time near the beginning of the quarter where I couldn’t afford to pay for my prescription for my anti-depressants, so I was going through withdrawals and had a seriously bad depressive episode that lasted through the first half of the quarter. Although I did eventually get back on track, it took a lot of effort and was really difficult to get back into my classes and to try and catch up on the work that I missed. I made a lot of friends my first couple of weeks here and I relied on them a lot throughout the quarter, both for academic support and emotional support. 3. What were the good parts of this quarter? Share examples! There was tons of good moments this quarter! One that sticks out to me was when me and my friends had a party to celebrate the 3 year anniversary of me quitting self-harming. We also had a weekly ritual of going on walks at 3am every saturday night (technically sunday morning) to play pokemon-go. 4. What were the more difficult parts? The more difficult parts of the quarter was when I was going through withdrawals and wasn’t able to sleep for more than a few hours a night, it was a tough few weeks both mentally and physically. I connected with a counselor through the SMACC and had a meeting with the dietician there because my friends were concerned about my eating habits and the fact that I was monitoring my calorie intake. I was eating around 200 calories a day and only sleeping a couple hours a night, so my

friends took me to the SMACC one morning. I was diagnosed with anorexia and now I’m working on a plan to eat more regularly and get more of the nutrition I need. 5. In what ways would you like next quarter to be different? What are your specific goals for next quarter? These could be academic, social, or personal goals. Next quarter I’d really like to stay more on top of my school work, I want to make sure that I balance social time and how much time I spend with my friends to make sure I’m able to focus on academics as much as possible. I also want to get into long-term therapy and connect with a psychologist in town to make sure I have support in case I go through a depressive episode again. 6. What steps can you take to reach these goals? I have an emotional support animal who lives with me in the dorms, so now that I’m back on my anti-depressants and I’m connecting with a therapist I’ll be able to make sure I’m mentally healthy (or at least getting mentally healthy) so I wont be held back next quarter by my mental illness. I also made a plan with my friends to go to the recreation center at least 3 times a week to make sure I’m exercising regularly! I know that having other people counting on me to go with them will really help keep me accountable....
