(If you wish to do a short-long work, like a novella, you must make a case for it, and it must be approved by me.) “Dogfight’’ by William Gibson. To give a brief overview, “Dogfight” is about a young drifter named Deke who finds himself at a bus stop in Virginia. At the bus stop, he comes across a video game called Fokkers & Spads, which simulated war planes fighting. At this stop he meets Nance, who is a rich engineering student and becomes Deke’s companion as he becomes a beast at the game, but costs Deke all his friends. Deke is the protagonist in this story, as Nance the sympathetic character bond over “brain lock” which makes physical contact unbearable. Both are ecstatic to have found each other and the game but as time goes by, Deke becomes less and less interested in Nance and his future. It makes sense, however, as Deke is a poor lad who had to claw his way to the top, unlike Nance who is rich and already has his future lined up. Deke was not going to take this opportunity for granted but sacrificed his own social life for riches. P.S – This game kind of reminds me of Microsoft’s Flight Simulator Game which was made in the 80’s just as this short story came out. Also, arcade tournaments were coming into full swing which made the story more appealing to its audience.
