Purpose of Assessment William, a 16-year-old male, was referred by his father for assessment as to whether his current heightened anxiety and moodiness is a delayed reaction stemming from his parent’s prior marital issues. Background (Family history, developmental, social) William, a year 11 student at Stromlo High School, is three years older than his sister Georgie and both live at home with their professional parents: Phillip and Katie. Pregnancy was normal; early developmental milestones reported as normal for language and motor development. Aged eight, his parents separated, reconciling the relationship two years later which is now stable. William was hospitalised aged ten with concussion. William excels at science, maths and arts (particularly painting and photography), enjoys playing organised baseball and soccer, but participates little in class discussions and is easily distracted. Behavioural Observations- Mental Status Examination (MSE) William presented in casual, but neat dress and well groomed. There were no signs of unusual behaviours or movement other than slight nervousness and William was cooperative and friendly throughout with good eye contact. William’s speech was of a normal tone and rate and he expressed himself clearly and logically. His mood was neither depressed nor elevated. Affect was normal, but he appeared anxious. There were no signs of altered perception. William was alert and orientated to time, person and place. William showed insight and judgment into his anxiety which was related to his parents’ reaction to studying fine arts instead of medicine at university.
