Overall, these two acronyms BICS and CALP refer to the amount of time that is required for English language learners to develop conversational skills. Basic Interpersonal Communication Skills (BICS) is known as the language that is used on a day to day basis to interact with others. Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency (CALP) is more proficient in the academic language. This concept deals with the essential skills within academics such as reading, speaking, listening, and being able to write about a specific topic. When acquiring the language, it is important that learners develop the skills of comparing, classifying, synthesizing, evaluating, and inferring when developing academic competence. According to Jim Cummins, his thoughts are that a student's achievements with a second language have to do with the level of mastery they have with their own native language. Bearing in mind that most positive cognitive effects occur when both languages are highly developed. It's key that teachers understand the difference between social language and academic language acquisition. When working with students who are English language learners’ teachers should have different systems within the classroom for the student to aid them in developing better academic language. Teachers might consider having a "Word Wall" in the classroom with different academic terms. This gives the student the opportunity to refer to things in the classroom they have learned throughout the year. Integrating academic language into daily practice within the classroom will allow their students to progress and become more successful in their academic journey.
