How Rizal’s works relate to the Philippine nationalism. What made his novels became a source of patriotic values and nationalism. The Philippines' national hero, Dr. José Rizal, is known not just for his academic brilliance, but also for opposing the Spanish colonial authorities. Two important incidents in our hero's life occurred when he was eleven years old: GomBurZa's martyrdom and his mother's incarceration. Rizal's nationalist enthusiasm was reawakened by these events, which he exhibited when he was shot at the Bagumbayan. Despite the fact that his death sparked a movement to overthrow the government, Rizal will be remembered for his compassion for the Filipino people and the country. Rizal was a vocal opponent of the Spanish government, yet he did so in a peaceful and progressive manner. For him, “the pen was mightier than the sword.” Through his writings, he exposed the corruption and wrongdoings of government officials and Spanish friars. While in Barcelona, Rizal contributed essays, poems, allegories, and editorials to the Spanish daily La Solidaridad. Individual rights and independence, particularly for Filipinos, were the focus of the majority of his works, which included essays and editorials. As part of his reforms, he also campaigned for the Philippines to become a province of Spain. Noli Me Tángere (Touch Me Not) and El Filibusterismo, however, were two of his best works (The Reign of the Greed). In both volumes, Rizal vehemently opposed Spanish colonial rule in the Philippines, revealing the faults in Philippine culture at the time. Since he spoke about the country's injustices and brutalities inflicted by Spaniards, the government also barred Filipinos from reading the controversial works. They were, however, unable to completely ban it. As more Filipinos read the writings, they learned that the friars had perpetrated horrible atrocities against them....
