Define the following directional terms: 1. Superior: up 2. Inferior: down 3. Cranial: closer to the head 4. Caudal: closer to the buttocks 5. Anterior: front 6. Posterior: back 7. Medial: closer to midline 8. Lateral: further away from midline 9. Proximal: closer to main part of the body 10. Distal: further away from the trunk 11. Superficial: closer to the body’s surface 12. Deep: deeper in the body 13. Flexion: movement that bends a joint or brings the bones closer together 14. Extension: movement that straightens or opens a joint 15. Adduction: brings a limb medially toward the body’s midline 16. Abduction: moves a limb laterally away from the midline 17. Medial Rotation: limb moves in toward the midline 18. Lateral Rotation: swings the limb away from the midline 19. Circumduction: 20. Elevation: movement upward 21. Depression: movement downward 22. Supination: when the radius and ulna lie parallel to one another 23. Pronation: when the radius crosses over the ulna, turning the palm down 24. Inversion: turning inward 25. Eversion: turning outward 26. Plantar Flexion: moving the ankle to point your foot into the earth 27. Dorsal Flexion: moving the ankle upward 28. Protraction: protrude 29. Retraction: retreat 30. Deviation: wander from the usual course 31. Opposition: happens at the carpometacarpal joint of the thumb (thumb touching pinky) 32. Supine: on your spine 33. Prone: lie on the table face down
