Drawing on the distinction between condition dignity and sortal dignity, briefly explain what it means to say that dignity is universal To say that dignity is universal is to believe that all human beings have an equal intrinsic value of dignity; one can't have more or less dignity than another. This type of dignity is known as sortal dignity. To determine one's dignity based on their achievement and overall worth in society is the opposite of sortal dignity, known as conditional dignity. Briefly describe the difference between a directed duty and an undirected duty. Come up with an example of each to illustrate. A directed duty the concept of one party owing something to another party whereas an undirected duty is the concept of owing something to fulfill a purpose for no one in particular. An example of directed duty would be if you promised to help your friend move; it is duty you owe to that one friend only. An example of undirected duty would be to donate to a charity. Explain the sense in which Kant thinks that dignity has an incomparable worth When Kant stated that dignity has an incomparable worth, he was acknowledging the fact that there is no object or cause in the universe that can justify any sacrifice of dignity. In other words, it would be irrational to trade dignity for anything including something that also has the value of dignity. Kant believes that humans have an elevated status among other things with value so we should have certain standards in terms of how we treat others.
