Workshop One - Immigration...

Description

Workshop One Citizenship and Registration Pre-Reading: familiarise yourself with the text book. Completing the preparation tasks will help you with this. The preparation tasks must be done before the class. The aims of this session are to familiarise yourself with the British Nationality Act 1981 and the ways in which people can register as British Citizens

Preparation Tasks 1. How many types of materials are referred to in the introduction contents section of the textbook? 2. Which statutes specifically refer to nationality issues? 3. Look up the citizenship section of the Borders, Citizenship and Immigration Act 2009. How are statutory changes in nationality law put into statute? 4. When is a person in born in Britain British from birth? 5. What is the statutory definition of “settled”?

Activity One: (from going through the preparation activities) Write out an explanation of the term “settled” in your own words. Activity Two: Explain what is meant by being a “British Citizen by descent”.

Who is entitled to claim British citizenship by descent? What are the implications of being British by descent?

Do you think a person born abroad to a British citizen should be British? Should the person born abroad be allowed to pass his or her citizenship on to the next generation?

How does the statute deal with children born stateless in the UK?

At this point it is useful to feed into your notes people with right of abode who are not British citizens. A right of abode is a right to live and work in the UK. These are people who were commonwealth citizens on 31st December 1982 and have not ever not been Commonwealth citizens and who have a parent born in the UK who was a citizen of the UK and colonies when he or she was born. Women married to a man with the right of abode before 1st January 1983 also have the right of abode.

Activity Three: When can a person register as a British Citizen?

You will be given an activity which is designed to illustrate the effect of the break up of empire on the cotton trade.

Following the activity, can you see why there is a folk belief that migration causes unemployment?...
