Sacred Sites Travel Journal Assignment Rohit Sharma 101347549

My two Sacred Sites to visit for this assignment are KEDARNATH and VAISHNODEVI

1) My plan to visit KEDARNATH in 2026

Kedarnath is a town in the Rudraprayag District of Uttarakhand, India, that is wellknown for the Kedarnath Temple. Rudraprayag, the district headquarters, is around 86 kilometres away. In the Rudraprayag district, it is a Nagar panchayat.

Kedarnath Dham is considered to be the most difficult destination to reach in the Chota Char Dham circuit of Uttarakhand. It requires the pilgrims to be physically prepared for the long journey of 14 km to reach the temple. However the final road leading up to the main temple of Kedarnath is not obsolete and is connected to a series of road networks that connect the various cities, towns and even

states. Kedarnath shrine is one of the most visited temples in India where people from different corners of India visit to attain salvation. It is advisable to avoid harsh winter and monsoon months. May to June and September to October are considered the best months to visit Kedarnath. The path leading to the temple gets highly dangerous during peak monsoons as landslides and floods are very common during this time of the year. A gate present in Sonprayag at a distance of 5 km below Gaurikund which keeps the movement of the vehicle on check and going only in one direction from Sonprayag to Gaurikund. This procedure ensures a minimum traffic level however it also adds and extra 1 to 1.5 hours of travel time. For an easy way out we can choose to park our car in Sonprayag itself and then hitch a ride with some up to Gaurikund. Transportation from Gaurikund – from Gaurikund the entire 14 km of the path leading up to Kedarnath Dham is paved. If, due to some reason we are unable to

complete the journey on foot then we have the option of choosing the services of dolis, pitthus, mules etc. the rates for these alternate transport services are not fixed. We will be living there for 2-3 days and our stay will be in a hotel or resort near Kedarnath or near the lincholi. It woul cost me around ₹600-700 per night, my whole trip would cost me around 7000-8000 rupees. Rishikesh – Devprayag – Srinagar – Rudraprayag – Agastyamuni – Guptkashi – Phata – Rampur – Sonprayag – Gaurikund – Lincholi – Kedarnath Kedarnath Route Map from Chandigarh Chandigarh to Haridwar (207 km) Rishikesh (25 km) – Devprayag (70 km)- Srinagar (36 km)- Rudraprayag (35 km)- Tilwara (10 km)- Agustumuni (11 km)- Kund (15 km)- Guptakashi (6 km)- Phata (12 km) -Rampur (10 km)- Sonprayag (4 km) -Gaurikund (6 km)- Rambara (8 km) – Garud Chatti (5 km) – Kedarnath (4 km).

2) My trip to Vaishno Devi in 2015

I was around 15 years old when my family planned a trip to vaishno devi, it was spring season and we suddenly decided to visit vaishno devi. We were 15 family members because we are joint family and all our cousins, uncles and aunt visited Vaishno Devi. We booked a car and driver fir our trip. The car costed around 20002500. We moved for Vaishno Devi on night, we all gathered at a point, that was our house, all my cousins and family members came to our house in the morning and till night we all planned our routes and stops. At night around 8pm, we started our journey and we headed towards Chandigarh to my brothers house. We reached there by 11 pm. He told us about various routes and other restrictions. From there we started our journey to Kurali by 1 am. We all were carrying our eating stuffs. We all played old hind Bollywood’s songs and the vibe in that car was incompatible.

Our elders started narrated their life history, how all they used to go to schools and what kind of games and other stuffs, they used to do. As we were a joint family so it was already decide to split the expenses occurred during the trip. All the expenses from renting the car to drop off the car, all were supposed to be split. The driver of the car was very fast and even very kind hearted , he kept on asking to everyone, whether someone need s the car to be stopped or not. From Kurali, it took us 2 hours to reach Kishanpur, there we all stopped for a while if someone wants to go to washroom, it was around 3:30 am. We took light breakfast and moved from there to our next stop to Pathankot. Pathankot is such a nice place to visit, it is all hilly area in Pathankot, we stopped at a restaurant, and we decided to directly stop at Vaishno Devi, no stop in between. We reached Birpur by 6 am. Then we searched for rooms and we all booked 3 rooms and stayed there for one night and next day morning at 4:30 am, we started our journey to Vaishno Devi temple, the way to temple is around 14-15 km. and we have to cover that distance on foot, it took our whole day to visit temple because at that time it was very crowded. We reached our rooms at night around 10pm and just slept without having food next morning we had our breakfast and started our journey back to home. The tour was around 3 days long and it costed 1200013000 in total which we all split per head. For travelling Vaishno Devi, no need to have a visa, one can go in their car itself or through bus and flights, now the trains have also started that take a direct route to Vaishno Devi The best time to visit Vaishno Devi is spring season, because it is hilly area with cold weather, spring season would be best to visit Vaishno Devi and also in Navratri’s, because goddess are worshiped in Navratri’s, so it would be best to visit Vaishno Devi in Navratri’s and spring season.

Why Kedarnath is considered to be sacred? The temple is one of India's 12 jyotirlingas and is reported to be around 1,200 years old. Along with other summits, the beautiful Kedarnath mountain (6,940 metres) looms behind the temple, adding to the scenery of the area. The structure is a work of art, made of massive, hefty, and evenly carved grey stone slabs. The Lord in his Sadashiva form is worshipped as the conical Shiva lingam. It distinguishes the temple from all other Shiva sanctuaries. The Garbha Griha serves as a place of devotion, while the Mandap serves as a gathering place for pilgrims and guests. Every year, on the first day of Kartik (October-November), the Kedarnath temple closes and reopens in Vaishakh (April-May). Around this time of year, the lower Himalayan range's snowcapped peaks, meadows, and forests seem to reverberate with the name of Lord Shiva. The Mandakini and Saraswati rivers run through the temple grounds. Gaurikund, Chorbari Tal, Bhairav Temple, and

Vasuki Tal are some prominent tourist sites in Kedarnath Dham. Kedarnath has certainly endured the test of time, according to history and tradition. According to legend, the Pandavas went to Lord Shiva to absolve themselves of the guilt of murdering their blood relations. Shiva, on the other hand, did not want them to be forgiven for their transgressions, so he disguised himself as a bull and roamed the Garhwal Himalayas. Shiva dove underground after being discovered by the Pandavas. Bhim was barely able to hold on to his hump. Shiva's bodily parts in the form

of a bull appeared in various locations. The bull's hump was discovered in Kedarnath, the navel was discovered in Madhya-Maheshwar, two forelegs were discovered in Tunganath, the face was discovered in Rudranath, and the hair was discovered in Kalpeshwar. The Panch Kedar - the five sacred locations - is the name given to them all. According to legend, the original Pandavas erected the temple of Kedarnath, and the current temple was built by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century A.D., who restored the shrine's splendour.

Why vaishno devi considered as sacred?

Mata Rani, also known as Vaishnavi or Vaishno Dev, is a manifestation of Shakti (Viswanathan, 2012). Both the name and the location of Vaishno Dev are wellknown. Goddess worship dates back to roughly 3000 B.C.E. during the Indus Valley Civilization (Chander, 2009). According to history, Pandit Shridhar was the first to uncover Vaishno Dev's sacred sanctuary over a thousand years ago. Vaishno Dev is supposed to have visited Shridhar, a devout devotee of hers, one night . She appeared in his nightmares and introduced herself, as well as showed him where her cave was located. He began his hunt right away, with the Goddess's help in his dreams, and soon discovered the location. There have been other gods that have visited the place as well. According to local spiritual mythology, Bhairava had a strong desire for her hand in marriage and had been pursuing her for a long time, so she killed him (Eck, 282). His head rolled down the hill, where he was worshipped as a goddess's guardian. Sati's arms are also reported to have fallen down to the shrine. Originally, there was only one natural tunnel for entering and exiting the cave, but in 1977, a second tunnel was exposed to the public, and in 1998, a third tunnel was built. A smooth stone, or svarpa, is a physical embodiment of the Goddess in the shrine (Eck, 22). The goddess's three aspects, Mahlakshm, Mahsarasvat, and Mahkl, are also embodied there in three stone lumps known as pindis (Eck, 267). The cave is about 100 feet long and rises 5200 feet above sea level. As pilgrims approach the cave, they are greeted and surrounded by many symbols of Hindu Gods and Goddesses. They reach the pindis, the pilgrimage's finale and site, after

passing by these dedications and wading into a pool of water. The pindis and the cave both have water flowing out of them. The goddess is claimed to have carved out the cave with her trident. According to pilgrimage literature, Vaishno Dev is the only spot where one can simultaneously worship Mahlakshm, Mahsarasvat, and Mahkl, the goddess's three aspects. https://rmiessle.sites.gettysburg.edu/rel-247/shakta-rivers/vaishno-devi/
