Lynn Phan Unit 3 Writer’s Memo

While writing this argument paper, I learned that the conclusion ties everything up. In high school, I was apart of the math and science specialty center. Our classes were mainly built to turn us into doctors and engineers, and we did not really focus on writing. In my AP English classes, we were specifically taught to write our argumentative essays in correspondence to the AP exams. Since we only had 45 minutes to write each essay, our conclusions were weak. Usually my conclusions was composed of the thesis because most students ran out of time. Even for world and United States history, the last paragraph was only composed of the thesis. From working on our unit three argumentative essay, I learned that the conclusion ties everything up. It’s the most important paragraph of the essay because it is the paragraph that the reader will remember the most. It reminds the reader of what the essay is about. In this class, I really like how we learned to write a good introduction for the essay. In high school, it would mainly be the summary of the article we read, and then the thesis at the end of the introduction paragraph. My intro paragraphs never really “hooked” the reader into wanting to read the essay. In this unit three project, I learned to make a short story in the beginning of the essay to hook the reader, and then bring it back in the conclusion of the story. I really liked how the short story tied up the essay, instead of just ending it with the thesis. I also learned that aside from the actual argument of the essay, I learned to incorporate how the subject matters in our world; the “so what?” of the essay. In high school, we would just write our argument essays, and that was it. There was no purpose to our essays. By adding why the topic matters to the world, it gives the essay more meaning. Because I learned so much more about writing from Focused

Inquiry, I was able to help others with their essays. I gave Jared ideas about adding the “so what” for standardized testing, and I hope he incorporated them in his essay. Aside from the actual essay, while researching about mass incarceration, I learned so much more about how it affects more than the inmate. For example, I did not realize that mass incarceration affects the child of the incarcerated parent more than the incarcerated person. I would not understand the life of being a single parent, but I couldn’t imagine how hard it is to provide for a child as a single parent, knowing that a spouse is in prison. It would be so hard for a child to be hungry because of low income, but could you imagine of the child’s friends knew that one of their parents is in prison? It’s hard enough to be hungry as a student, but it would be so much worse if the child was bullied because they have a parent in prison. For the overall process of this essay, I think that it wouldn’t be as good if Professor F did not assign the annotated bibliographies for homework each week. Knowing me, I would wait until the very last day to write this paper, spend all day to write it, and turn it in without checking the grammar. If I waited until the very last day, it would be the unit two persuasive letter all over again. I would write the introduction, get distracted, text Jared about how I procrastinated on the assignment, and proceed to bake cookies. Now that I did all of the research through the annotatives, writing the essay was easier than I thought. At first, I was writing each body paragraph just from the research that I have done. Then I realized that my essay was already written for me. I realized that I just had to make my summaries and responses flow more. Also, I did not really come up with my idea. A few months before the unit three project, we learned about crime and mass incarceration in sociology class. Even though I still do not know what sociology is about, I have to admit that this class made me think about society in a different way.

It forces you to understand different perspectives of things, and it teaches you to be mindful of everything. Professor F also helped me with this idea because he went over the subject of “Jail” on the the board. I also had help from Jamie because he introduced me to the topic of “police brutality”....
