Writer’s Journal prompt - 3

Please re-read the short position paragraph “On Buying Local” on p. 124. Think about the following as you analyze and discuss the short position paragraph in your Writer’s Journal: 1. Who is the audience? 2. What is the author’s purpose? 3. What is the author’s stance? 4. Is this a common stance? Please explain 5. Do you agree or disagree with this position?

The paragraph “On Buying Local” on page 124 was written by Katherine Spriggs. In this short passage, the author had argued about the efficiency between small farms and large farms when they use the resources. The writer has responded to the people who do not support buying local. Through the passage, the author showed her support for small farms. By directly pointing out her views, the readers can see a different and clearer view of using resources between the two types of farms. Katherine has stated her own stance in this paragraph in order to show the readers that this is a common stance. In the author’s opinion, if we considered that the small farms are not as productive as large farms, that would be “a common misconception”. This misconception was depended only on the

measurement of the economists. To oppose that, Katherine quoted McCauley's statement to clarify the point of view, which made her essay more plausible. She acknowledges the truth through that quote but holds to her argument. By showing her own authority voice and using many references in this passage, also, in the whole essay, the writer had successfully persuaded me that this is an important topic. Overall, this short position makes me agree with her point of view.
