WRITING A CRITIQUE OF AN INDUSTRIAL DESIGN WHAT IS A CRITIQUE?  is an evaluation or judgment of a particular object. usually a critique means “act of criticizing or remark”. INDUSTRIAL DESIGN  is the application of principles in the arts and the sciences to improve the aesthetics and functionality of product.  process of design applied to products that are manufactured through techniques. NOTE:  As with all reviews, well thought out CRITERIA for EVALUATION should be identified beforehand by the writer to establish the credibility of the review process.  In your case, probably your criteria were the gadget’s ease to use, carrying convenience, outstanding features and even battery life.  One must set up points to be examined about the product and established with fact about the product, whether or not the product has satisfactory met the standards.  The body of the Critique, on the other hand, should first introduce the THESIS STATEMENT and then provide supporting details to further substantiate the general claim of the author.  In talking about a product, the author must be familiar with the jargon or specialized language used in relation to product.  The conclusion sums up all the points stated in the body.  In this case of critique, a summary of the points is not enough in the conclusion; instead, the conclusion must also include the author’s general impression of a product.  A critique of an industrial design may or may not contain recommendation.

HOW TO WRITE A CRITIQUE 1. Identify the gadget which you would like to write about.

2. Conduct a research about it. FIRST DRAFT  The first Draft need not to be perfect since its purpose is to simply translate your ideas into writing. 1. TITLE – iphone 4: Worth Dying For? By: Romeo Paolo D> Esquillo 2. 1ST PARAGRAPH – contains general information regarding the products and facts about it. 3. 2nd TO 8th PARAGRAPH – this serves as a BODY. This discusses the forms and features of a product. 4. 9th PARAGRAPH – this presents the Conclusion or the general opinion. The Importance of Conciseness and Synthesis  The problems in the 1st draft  it lacks of a central Idea/thesis statement to connect all the ideas and details mentioned about the gadget.  OBSERVE the KISS principle –”KEEP IT SHORT AND SIMPLE” in order to communicate ideas more effectively.  remember, in effective writing, longer is not necessary better.

SECOND DRAFT  After a careful perusal of the 1st Draft, we can revise it to make the presentation of ideas more coherent  In the second draft, we also check grammar and errors.  Coherence, organization of Idea, statement of Facts and details should be well polished....
