Abriyana Johnson Module 3-2 November 2020

1. What is the author's claim in the selected reading? In other words, what do you believe the author wants their audience to learn or understand better once they have finished reading? I believe David Sedaris wants his audience to gain an understanding of what it's like to learn French in France. He jokes throughout the reading describing his professor as a sadist and speaks of her ridiculing behavior. He very clearly makes it a point that he is the oldest person in the class and the least advanced. In the end, after a seemingly grueling course from his point of view, he was able to understand his professors' entire insult which was something he was not able to do at the beginning of the class.

2. Have you identified new key points that the author uses to support their claim in the selected reading? If so, include them here. If not, restate the key points you uncovered in your Writing Notes assignment and explain why the key points from that assignment have remained the same, even after conducting an active reading of the article. I have not discovered any new points in my reading this time around, so I have the same key points as previously stated. David wants very badly to learn the French Language. He makes it clear that he is intimidated not only by his classmates but also by his professor. Also, he wants people to understand his point and feelings of being a 40-year-old man learning French in France. By the end of the reading, he can understand more and be able to form a bond with his classmates.

3. Describe the author’s target audience: What group (or groups) of people is the author trying to reach with their message? In my opinion, the author's target audience was very conversational; A general audience I suppose, or future students wanting to study over abroad. I do not feel like his writing is agesensitive either, the humor was appropriate and easy to understand and laugh at. I feel as though David did not have much of a message aside from telling his story, and experience.

4. What choices does the author make in their writing to connect with this target audience? David uses humor and "to the point" vernacular to connect with his audience. He uses a humorous tone throughout the text, to keep the audience's attention. He discusses feelings anyone could relate to from fear, insecurity, and intimidation from an authority figure.

5. Explain your evaluation of the author’s claim: Is the claim strong or weak? What evidence or key points from the writing best support the author’s claim? If you found the claim to be weak, explain why the evidence or key points provided did not effectively support the author’s claim. In "Me Talk Pretty One Day" David Sedaris's claim is that of a 40-year-old man moving to Franc just to learn the language and being completely taken out of his element. He brings up how much he does not know in comparison to classmates. He discusses how much his teacher just seems to pick on everyone, no matter how "advanced" they are in the class or not....
