“Me Talk Pretty One Day” by David Sedaris tells of the author’s experience after moving to France and taking a French class after deciding at the age of 41 to learn the language. He humorously details his insecurity and discomfort living in a foreign country as well as dealing with an extremely vulgar and rude French teacher who belittles her students. After some time, he realizes that some of the other students feel that same way and they develop a sense of comradery with one another. Ultimately, he discovers during class that he can understand the instructor’s insults, meaning he has learned some of the language, therefore ending the article in an uplifting manner with the message that people can achieve their dreams regardless of the obstacles in their path (Sedaris, 1999).
