Expected Pharmacological Action Acts at many leveles in the CNS to produce anxiolytic effect. May produce CNS depresion

Therapeutic Use Relief of anxiety

Complications CNS: dizziness; drowsiness; lethargy; confusion; headache; mental depression; paradoxical excitation. EENT: blurred vision GI: constipation; diarrhea, N/V; weight gain Derm: rash Misc: physical and physiological dependence; tolerance.

Medication Administration If early morning anxiety or anxiety between doses occur, same total daily dose should be divided into more frequent intervals. PO: may be administered food if GI upset occurs.

Contraindications/Precautions Hypersensitivity; sensitivity with other benzodiaepines; preexisting CNS depression; severe uncontrolled pain, angleclosure glaucoma, sleep apnea or pulmonary disease, cns depression in pregnancy, seizures in infants P: renal and hepatic impairment, hormonal contraceptive, elderly higher risk for falls and cns effects.

Interactions

Nursing Interventions Assess degree and minifestation of anxiety. Assess drowsiness, light-headedness, and dizziness geri: assess cns effects and risk for falls. Monitor cbc and liver and renal function

Alcohol, antidepressants, other benzodiapines, antihistamines, and opioid analgesics cause inc in CNS depression hormonal contraceptives.

Client Education Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness Decreased sense of anxiety w/o cns side effects, decreased freq and severity of panic attacks, decreased sypmtoms of PMS
