Description

The Farm: • Woodstock was held at Yasgur’s Farm. • Originally was supposed to be held in the Upstate New York Town of Woodstock • The event was supposed to be held in Wallkill, New York but the citizens of Wallkill were strongly against having the festival for they did not wish to deal with the crowd that it would draw. • Wallkill passed a statute on July 2, 1969 banning the festival from taking place in their city. • In mid July, Max Yasgur, A dairy farmer in Bethel, New York offered his place to them. • Max Yasgur was a 49 year old conservative republican who actually supported the Vietnam war • Yasgur felt the festival would both help bridge the age gap and help his business • Also the income from it would offset the cost of hay because it was a wet year. • The farm was said to be leased for $10,000. • Before the event, Yasgur received multiple threatening phone calls due to him choosing to hold the event. • Yasgur provided free water for the festival as well when people began trying to sell water • He also provided food either at cost or for free. • People in the town actually protested Yasgur and boycotted his dairy • Yasgur quote: "if the generation gap is to be closed, we older people have to do more than we have done.” • On January 7, 1970 Yasgur’s neighbors sued him for property damage

• He planned to go back to dairy farming after the festival but had to move to Florida due to poor business and damage to the farm • He moved to Marathon, Florida in 1971 and later died of a heart attack at age 53 • The farm was purchased by Alan Gerry • The Farm is now open as a tourist site and is home for Bethel Woods Center for the Arts...
