Description

People consider The Spanish-American War as the first “media war”. In the late 19th century, journalism sensationalized events, driving the United States into the war with Spain. Yellow Journalism uses the technique that exaggerates the news over facts to attract readers. The media try to convince Americans that Spain was not good for us, and it would be good for us to remove Spain. The US would get a lot of benefits from having Cuba, such as sugar, and tobacco markets. They would have the island containing the Caribbean sea, having completely control over Caribbean trade. However, Spain's business was mainly in Havana, Which is the capital of Cuba. So Americans needed to remove Spain from Cuba. Sensationalizing news is to gain sales. If there is a war, they will have crazy things to tell people about it. People should get involved in the war and keep buying the news to stay updated. So, they get more profits. Yellow journalism plays a crucial role in the American public. They cook up a fairy tale world, where their information was legitimized so that it would be supported by the public and that a democratic government would also have to. Although it might be an overstatement to say that yellow journalism started the war, it is proper to say that yellow journalism escalated the public’s desire for war. I think that the media nowadays have a much greater effect on the American public. With sophisticated headlines, they could easily attract people that care about the topics. For example, no media called Arizona for Biden but only Fox News. And then, my family and friends, even my country, believed that Fox News updated the information in the fastest way. So, I just paid attention to Fox News to follow the election. However, Arizona was in status that was too early to call. And, Fox News just tried to fabricate the election to pull the view. My question is what is advantages and disadvantages of social media? and why do we need the media?

Hello Titilayo I really enjoyed your readings at the start of the course. I agree with you that the headline is far different from the content. They deliberately make some clickbait headlines to pull people into their content, and they would get more profits. In my opinion, I would verify information that I am subjected to otherwise we just click on those headlines if they are not harmful. Because verification takes time. For example, if I meet a clickbait “$2000 for each individual in the next stimulus check”, I would just click. I do not mind how much money do they give. I think I am subjected to the election, so I should verify information on who I should vote for before I put it in my mind. Hello Deanna I agree that newspapers gain sales by putting in these crazy headlines. Further, in my opinion, they want to influence us in the information that is their interest to support their idea. I think that can we live without social media? Yes, the way that life used to be in the 1900s, and everyone was happy with it. However, with the rapid growth of technology, we need something that can update constantly news in the most convenient way so that we can stay connected with the world. And, obviously, social media is the only thing that can meet our needs. Despite the fact that there is some clickbait that might annoy us, social media is an essential thing that we need now to catch up with the world that rapidly develops day by day....
