1-2 Short Answer: Cultural Objects and Their Culture Jessica Crooks HUM 100 Q2989: Perspectives in the Humanities Instructor: Valerie Thompson October 28, 2021

1) List three cultures or subcultures you identify strongly with, and rank them from most to least significant in your life. These can be national, ethnic, religious, and they can include subcultures or groups related to your personal interests. The first culture that is most significant that I identify with is religion because it shows your background on if there is a God or if you believe in multiple God’s or no God. My religion is currently Christianity, but I was not always a Christian. As a child I was raised in a Catholic Church, granted these religions are similar, they also have their differences. I feel that since becoming a Christian I have learned more about God and how to pray for forgiveness from God, rather than telling the priest my sins and asking for forgiveness from him/her. The second culture that is next significant that I identify with is ethnic background. Showing your heritage is another important culture to many. Some people have different ethnic beliefs about what is appropriate in public and how to act when you are with others. Another reason that ethnic culture is important to me is because of how men and women are looked at differently in the workplace, which I believe that everyone in the workplace should be looked on how well they do their job vs if they are man or woman. Making sure that I understand all ethnic backgrounds and what they believe in is very important due to my current job and future career. The third culture/subculture that is least significant that I identify with is stock car racing and baseball. I love both sports. I grew up in the stock car community as a spectator and wished to drive a stock car at the local track I grew up attending. I finally got that opportunity once I graduated high school and the local track put on a powder puff race for us girls who wanted to drive. I ended up finishing 4th in that race, but while at the track I met my husband who was a driver at the track. The track didn’t have a powder puff race for 2 years then the owners put one on again, but this time I ran my future

husband's car and won the race. Then another 2 years went by until the last ever powder puff race was held, this time I ran in 2 different divisions (1- Bombers and 2- Pure Stock), which I won the Bomber class/division and 4th in the Pure Stock class/division. Now I am a spectator again, which I am fine with. Baseball came into my life more once my son and my father-in-law started watching the Tampa Bay Rays on TV and next thing my husband and I knew, our son was starting to play t-ball and has worked his way up to 10U at our local recreational baseball teams. We are so proud of how well he does with baseball and all the positions he can play.

2) Identify one representative object from the humanities for each of the cultures or subcultures you identify with. For my first culture the object that would best represent the culture is Jesus on the cross, which is a visual art, literature and media. For my second culture the object that would best represent the culture is a flag of your county that your ancestor came from, which is a visual art. Lastly, for my third culture the object that would best represent this culture is a stock car or baseball, which is a performing arts and media.

3) In a few words, explain how the cultural object reflects the culture in which it exists. Consider which aspects of culture have relevance for each object: politics, history, religion, social perceptions, technology, media, education and so on. The relationship between Jesus on the cross (object) and religion (culture) is religious and social perceptions. The relationship between a flag of your county your ancestor came from (object) and ethnic (culture) is history, media, and social perceptions. The relationship between a stock

car or baseball (object) and stock car racing and baseball (culture) is history, social perceptions, media....
