Short-Answer Respond to the following in 50 to 75 words each, unless otherwise specified. 1. What is sociology? What are some examples of what sociologists study? I believe sociology is the key discipline in the social sciences. It is the subject which concerns our experience as individuals, what we make of our lives, what we would understand as possibilities for our future. Sociologists study our experiences as individuals, models of society, understanding human behavior, and understanding why people act the way they do. Sociologists also study the influences of society on humans.

2. When examining the theoretical perspectives in sociology, each perspective has a specific focus and level of analysis. What does the level of analysis mean? The three theoretical perspectives in society are symbolic interactionism, functional analysis, and conflict theory. The levels of analysis are macro level and micro level analysis. Macro level is the examination of large scale patterns of society. Micro levels is an examination of small scale patterns of society.

3. Refer to Table 1.1 (p.19) in Ch. 1 of Essentials of Sociology. In 25 to 50 words each, describe the focus and level of analysis for the following theoretical perspectives: a. Symbolic Interactionalism: symbolic interactionalism is things to which we attach meaning, they are the key to understanding how we view the world and communicate with one another. The focus is the face to face interaction, how people use symbols to create social life. The level of analysis is microsociolofical.

b. Functional Analysis: is that a society is a whole unit, made of interrelated parts that work together. It is rooted in the origins of sociology. The focus is the relationships among the parts of society, how these parts are functional or dysfunctional. The level of analysis is macrosociological.

c.

Conflict Theory: a theoretical framework in which society is viewed as composed of groups that are competing for scarce resources. The focus of analysis is the struggle for scarce resources by groups in a society. How the elites use their power to control the weaker groups. The level of analysis is macrosociological.

4. Culture shapes many things in our lives, sometimes including what we wear, what we eat, and how we interact with each other. According to Ch. 2 of Essentials of Sociology, what are the influences of culture in society? The influences of culture in society are the language, beliefs, values, norms, behaviors, and even material objects that are passed down from one generation to the other.
