Description

SCS 100 Project 1 Comparison Template Complete this template by replacing the bracketed text with the relevant information.

1. Question(s) related to how individuals are represented in the ads

2. Questions related to how groups and group behavior are represented in the ad

3. Questions related to how cultures and cultural identity are represented (or not represented) in the ad 4. How do the ads compare to each other?

Ad 1: Official Ram Trucks Super Bowl Commercial: “Farmer” The individuals in the ad are shown as religious, why doesn’t they address farmers who may not believe in God? This could be potentially offensive. The ad also implies that only farmers can complete the tasks mentioned and God only made farmers to do the work? Why does the ad imply that they are not useful in other scenarios just as braun? Are they implying Ram trucks are only for farmers? Why were there only Americans? Why aren’t they showing the other cultures that farm?

Ad 2: Texas Department of State Health Services: Shhhh Why are the “teens” shown male, is the goal to say males are the only ones who smoke? Why are the individuals shown non-white, in todays whitewashed society this tells me that they are implying people of color are the ones smoking?

Why is this ad centered on teen smoking, why not populous?

Ad 3: L’Oreal: The Waterproof Ad 4: Schlage Locks: ExExperience Girlfriend Understanding that this is a makeup ad, why are the people representing the product all female when males can wear makeup also? Why are all the females younger, there seems to be no diversity in age?

Why did they use a breakup for a lock commercial? Why did the female have to be so bitter and angry? Why are they insinuating that the female is going to break in the males’ house?

Why did they have to use a sad movie to portray the effectiveness of waterproof makeup? While also only using females, implying that females are more emotional.

Why is the scene of the commercial set in a fancy restaurant for a breakup? Why is the couple white?

Why aren’t there more than Why does the ad lack Understand that this is a Why are white females agricultural American culture diversity with the people make-up commercial, I feel depicted as crazy and represented? (though the shown? As I said earlier, are like the diversity across racial unstable? diversity of races shown was they implying only other races and sexes was limited. good) are the ones smoking? I tried to choose ads that were inherently different from each other to give myself a better platform to use. Comparing the ads to each other, I noticed that all the ads have a certain “type” of person in them, i.e. female, male, races, or in the Ram commercial “farmers”, I assume this is to targeted at a certain type of person to watch them. The only ad that had ANY sort of diversity in it

5. What overall observations might a social scientist be interested in studying in relation to the themes present in these advertisements? What larger questions about human interactions might they ask?

Ad 2: Texas Department of Ad 3: L’Oreal: The Waterproof Ad 4: Schlage Locks: ExAd 1: Official Ram Trucks Experience Girlfriend State Health Services: Super Bowl Commercial: Shhhh “Farmer” was the Ram truck ad, and even there it was still limited to American Farmers, considering obviously that Ram is available in other countries (which I am unsure of). I think overall a Social Scientist would be interested in the fact the ads were not depicted with appropriate diversity over race, sex, and sexual orientation. Out of the 4 ads I choose, the Ram Truck ad seemed to have the most diversity which was across races and sexes but lacked in cultural diversity. The other 3 ads did not cross any diverse lines. 1. Would making the couple in the Schlage commercial interracial change how the ad was viewed? 2. If the Health Services ad had a male and female role who were two different races, would it be more effective? 3. What if the L’Oreal ad had transgendered and men in their ad, would that be a more effective way to portray the effectiveness of the makeup?...
