SCS 100 Project 1 Comparison Template Complete this template by replacing the bracketed text with the relevant information. Ad 1: Carl's Jr Au Natural

1. Question(s) related to how individuals are represented in the ads

Why is the female being sexualized in a burger commercial?

Ad 2: Colgate: Sink Child

Why is it a little girl being used instead of a little boy? Why is the little girl being compared to the teenage girl?

Ad 3: Volkswagen TDI Clean Diesel: Mom Why did the man behind the counter not do anything about correcting the children's behavior in his store?

Why were only males used as on lookers ? 2. Questions related to how groups and group behavior are represented in the ad

3. Questions related to how cultures and cultural identity are represented (or not represented) in the ad

4. How do the ads

Would men really react this way in a public setting? If the roles were reversed would a woman act this way if it was a male model? Being that Carls jr has worldwide locations, is this commercial shown in all countries it has locations at?

Why is the little girl made to seem dirty and poor? Why is the environment around the little girl so isolated?

Why is it that white woman are being used in the commercial?

Why is the little girl made seem like shes from another country?

Why is it that children are being made seem like they have to stay in the car if not they will get into problems?

What does the isolation in the video say about what kind of environment the little girl is growing up in?

Why is the song in the background used in this ad? Would this same song be used in other countries?

Ad 4: Tide Plus A Touch of Downy: The Princess Dress Why is it a father daughter relationship used? Why is the mother not present? Why does the little girl have to love the princess dress and not the sheriff outfit? Why was a family as a whole used in the commercial? What is the commercial wanting to portray with only the father present? Do you think this commercial is trying to normalize single parent homes? Do you think this commercial is trying to normalize males doing chores around the house?

I do not see how these two ads can compare to each other. They really do not have anything in common other than they use

compare to each other? 5. What overall observations might a social scientist be interested in studying in relation to the themes present in these advertisements? What larger questions about human interactions might they ask?

women a lot except for the Tide commercial. I think overall social scientist would like to see how woman are viewed among a society or culture. Many of these commercials use woman as either an example or a mere representation of something sexual or incapable. The only commercial that does not have a woman in it is the Tide commercial and it shows how a father is taking over all the house duties. I think questions the would as would be: 1. How does gender play a role in human interaction? 2. Are woman seen different? 3. Do women have specific roles that they have to abide by?...
