The Brief: Create an interpretation of Edgar Allan Poe’s ‘The Pit and the Pendulum’, communicating the themes, ideas, styles in a new and innovative way. Melina, a mentally unstable artist, has trapped those who have done her wrong in her studio, introducing them as her ‘greatest piece of art to date’. During the development and performance of this piece I learnt a variety of skills and techniques:
Imagination – I had to really use my imagination with this role as it was a lot more creative than other roles I’ve had. I developed the characters as we expanded our storyline and created backstories. I also created a list of character traits so that I could really go and throw myself into the performance Characterisation – Personally, I think that Annabelle’s character was much more dramatic than any roles I have played previously. Most of her facial expressions were very dramatic and bold as well as her physicality. Accent – When playing the role of the science teacher I had to adopt an RP accent to make myself sound more professional and educated as this was more suitable than my

Responsibiliti es During the creation of this piece each member of our group took on a leadership role and assisted in directing the piece. This meant that I was partially responsible for the direction the production would take; because of this I made sure to contribute ideas frequently and try to keep the piece creative and entertaining while still fitting the brief we were given. Additionally, I was responsible for creating my own characters including the costuming. Creating Annabelle was particularly interesting as I chose to make her an exaggerated and quirky character using different gestures and physical expressions.
Professionali sm Within this piece I think I showed a good deal of professionalism. I consistently arrived on time to all of the scheduled rehearsals, including any additional ones. When we were creating the plot and developing our characters I extensively researched things we could use and anything that would be helpful in improving my performance. For example, I looked into how to use Received Pronunciation and the ways I needed to change my speech patterns to do so. I also contributed ideas and suggestions to various areas of the production throughout the creative process including staging, vocal expressions, physicality and costuming....
