2-3 Management Approaches Jessica Waterfield Southern New Hampshire University

As requested by the Director of Retail Operations, I was given the task to figure out why there was a decrease in productivity and efficiency at SNHU Pet Supply Company. During my evaluation, I noticed that there was a lack of resolution between management and the employees. Each week, managers give out tasks to employees without considering if they can do the job with their skill set. This left the employees feeling micromanaged and showing resentment towards management because their skill sets are not being utilized correctly. There also seems to be a lot of paperwork to complete the weekly assigned task. Employees are asked to fill out a detailed timesheet every day and provide a separate email to explain any changes that may have occurred. I can see why this would lead to high-stress levels between the team and develop anxiety when meeting the manager's demand. I believe the decrease in productivity and efficiency is due to the company's cycle of unresolved issues.

The four general functions for any management team to achieve company goals are planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. These four functions are beneficial when appropriately used in the day-to-day operations of running an organization. The company may not use them every day, but as stated in Somo Webtext, they also optimize the teams' performance and individuals they manage. For management to be effective, they must have a plan by identifying the best course of action to complete the objective. Organizing involves the managers assigning the proper resources to be given appropriately and in the correct order. Leading involves the managers being able to influence their employees to maximize the teams' performance and empower them. Controlling involves ensuring that the performance does not deviate from expected standards. Controlling consists of three steps, which include:

1. Establishing performance standards. 2. Comparing actual performance against standards. 3. Taking corrective action when necessary.

In conclusion, the management team should be more receptive to employees' feedback and reevaluate how the current assignments are being implemented. To increase productivity, the managers should make necessary changes to the job assignments. The managers should also learn the strengths and weaknesses of their employees and assign them appropriately based on that specific employee's skill sets. Understanding the skill sets will help lift the stress off the employees and boost efficiency more. This will allow the managers to influence the employees and better utilize them better as followers. Furthermore, I believe that there is no need for a separate email explaining the additional details; these timesheets should be condensed into one report and probably done weekly unless something significant happens and needs to be addressed immediately....
