Why did you choose this quote?

I chose this quote specifically because it represents the development of the main character. In the main characters own words unknown to him he reveals more to us then we could ever have known. He reveals he is not the same as he was in the first book but still has some of his old self (shown in the feathered serpent part).

Copy the quote here:

In my youth, I was always one for dramatic entrance. Now, in keeping with my character, I gravitate more toward the subtle and refined. Okay, with the occasional feathered serpent thrown in.

Tell me why it is significant to the story or to a reader life

At this specific time in the story Drake had just appeared in the council building after an emergency meeting. The golem had attacked again and instead of appearing with a bang he just slipped in and began to listen to the ongoing report.

When I was younger I regularly used dramatic entrances. Now as my character grows I have became more reserved, but not without exceptions.

In the first book the main character Drake is new to magic and sees the more recreational side to it. Now as he progresses and develops as a character and magician he understands that he can use his magic for a more practical use in the world but only if he becomes more cruel. In my youth, I was always one for dramatic entrance. Now, in keeping with my character, I gravitate more toward the subtle and refined. Okay, with the occasional feathered serpent thrown in.

I chose this quote because it represents the different facets of the book perfectly. It shows the comedic side of the book in the more wonky text. While at the same time the image behind the words shows the dark side of the book. The book is a perfect balance of an intricate and mind twisting plot, with the addition of comedic narration to portray a lighter side to the previously dark story. If you take this quote at a more character specific standpoint, it shows how Drake, the main character develops throughout the book and storyline. He goes from the magician who is jovial and is just learning the ropes of magic, and as the world around him pushes him to become darker and stronger to be on the level of his foes. The final part of the quote mentioning the feathered serpent (a reference only one who read the books would understand) is a final testament to his old self, showing that he is still Drake even though he has been forced to change.
