SPH 106 GRAPHIC ORGANIZER INTRODUCTION TO FILM APPRECIATION DR. DITTUS Note: Save this file with the proper file name and then you can type directly into the boxes, the table will expand as necessary when you type.

Thesis: Genre is extremely important to audiences because they get to choose what different genres of films they want to see. Main Point #1 Genre is useful to audiences Main Point #2 Genre adapts to excite the audience Main Point #3 Genre is influenced on historical contexts

You have to make at least two claims in support of your thesis. If you find you need three, that is fine, but remember less line of analysis with deeper development is generally better than more lines with less development. In each column, write a sentence which offers the reader a reason to believe your thesis. Those sentences can become your topic sentences for the paragraph where you explain and support that claim.

Genre is useful for audiences as it enables them to differentiate between the styles and types of narrative, allowing them to decide on what they enjoy. They evolve, adopting new conventions and narratives to excite the audience. This variation is well-liked by audiences who would become bored of watching the same thing over and over again. All genres exhibit differences due to the influences of historical contexts that were apparent at the time. Context and Support The claims/points you will be making will require development of a context beyond the film you are analyzing. For example, if you want to argue that a Bond villain is a typical Bond villain because he reflects social senses of evil at the time, you would need to discuss what the social focus of evil was at the time of the film (note: the claim about the nature of Bond villains would be developed in the box above)

Audiences in film are always drawn to something new. They like having to decided which genre they get to pick of film for whatever mood they are in. This gives the audience the choice of deciding what film they want to watch.

Audience like new and different things especially in film. A lot of movies in genres are alike and audiences typically get bored of it. For example, There are a bunch of sci-fi movies that are typically about aliens and usually have the same story line. Genre depends heavily on what is going on in that specific time during that film that is being made. For example, Invasion of the Body Snatchers is manifestly a metaphor of society during the Cold War, with pod people representing Russian communist Example #1 To support your point, provide a specific example from the film and explain how that example supports your position

Star Wars is a perfect example. In changed everything. Nobody seen a movie like that before and it really excited the audience. It supports my claim because the audience, even to this day, says how Star Wars is one of the greatest movies ever made because it was different from what audiences are used to seeing.

Example #2 To support your point, provide a specific example from the film and explain how that example supports your position

In the stars wars series, audiences haven’t seen a story line and plot like that before and it excited the audience It supports my claim because audiences are looking for something new and in the series it was something brand new to them.

Example #3

To support your point, provide a specific example from the film and explain how that example supports your position

In Star Wars return of the Jedi the plot twist being that Luke is the son of Darth Vader was monumental and shocking to the audience. The audience loved this because nobody was expecting it and it was new and exiting to them with the plot twist.

Example #4 To support your point, provide a specific example from the film and explain how that example supports your position

Also in Return of the Jedi how the rebels finally overcame the empire and won the war. It was in a way similar to other movies but it was very well-liked that the rebels won and defeated the empire....
