Anterior: the front site of the body; facing forward Medial: near the medial plane Bilateral: relating to the right and left sides of the body or of a body structure such as right and left extremities Palmer: relating to the palm of the hand Plantar: relating to the bottom of the foot Posterior: the backside of the body; facing backward Lateral: farther from the medial plane Deep: further inside the body Distal: further from the trunk Dorsal: backside of the body/relating to the back/posterior Inferior: below the medial plane Prone: body lying facedown Supine: body lying on its back Proximal: nearer to the trunk of the body Superficial: near the surface of the body Contralateral: opposite side of the body Caudal: towards the “tail” of the body Bilateral: relating to the right and left sides of the body or of a body structure such as right and left extremities Cephalic: towards the head of the body Superior: above the medial plane Ventral: towards the front of the body Volar: Relating to palm of the hand or sole of the foot Supinated: rotating externally (forearm from anatomical position away from the body) Pronated: rotating internally (forearm from anatomical position towards the body, palm facing body).

Flexion: decrease in joint angle

Extension: increase in joint angle Rotation: angular motion in which a rigid body moves in a circular path around a pivot point or an axis rotation. Circumduction: circular motion of a limb, combination of 4 movements Abduction: movement away from midline Adduction: movement towards midline Plantar Flexion: extension of ankle (point toes away from body) Dorsi Flexion: flexion of ankle (top of foot towards tibia) Horizontal Flexion: the movement where the angle between the two bones decreases on the horizontal plane Horizontal Extension: the movement where the angle between two bones increases and it occurs on horizontal plane Elevation: superior/upward movement (shrug shoulder) Depression: inferior/downward movement (lower shoulder) Protraction: forward movement (example shoulder) Retraction: backward movement (example shoulder) Inversion: inward and medial movement (weight on outer edge of your foot) Eversion: outward and lateral movement (weight on the inner edge of your foot) Horizontal Abduction: the horizontally across the body.
