Description

Kin 122 02 Jan 11 Statistics  

An objective means of interpreting data Statistics inform about 2 things o Reliability o Meaningfulness Measures of central tendency and variability are the most fundamental components of most statistical techniques

Central Tendency 

Single score that best represents all scores for a group of individuals o Mean (average)  Most common measure of central tendency  Sum of scores/number of scores o Median  Number occurring at midpoint of a series (numbers must be in increasing order)  If there is an even number of scores, take the mean of the two midpoint scores o Mode  Most frequently occurring number

Variability 

Best estimate of spread of scores o Variance (s2) o Refer to slides for equations o S2 = 9 Standard deviation (s) o Square root of variance o Root9 = 3

Normal Distribution 

Many statistical tests are based on the assumption of a normal distribution

Qualitative Research 

 

For exploring and understanding meanings ascribed by individuals or groups o emergent questions and procedures o typically done in participants settings o generation of themes from the particulars o researcher is part of meaning making process o flexibility in how research is represented examples: effect of therapy dogs on patients with anxiety, Collection of qualitative data o Documents – journals, meeting minutes o Audiovisual material – videos, blogs, websites

Kin 122 02 Jan 11 Observations – noting a phenomenon in the field setting through the senses of the observer o Interviews – can be structured, semi-structured, conversational; one on one, focus group; face to face, telephone, internet One – on – One interview guide o Should start with a broad question about central topic o Important to build rapport o Questions shoulder be:  Open ended (tell me about, describe, how do you feel)  Clear, singular  Include follow up probes as needed o Recording interviews  Audiotaping (need to be transcribed – written)  Field notes o
