Editing Video Book Notes 

As you work through the lesson, save your file often when you have completed a few steps so you can Revert back to the last saved version of the file as needed. The instructions will have you save after each section, but you should save sooner and more often.

Save your Photoshop .PSD file at the end of the lesson before you start rendering (exporting) the file to the .MP4 video file format just in case the rendering does not complete.

Lesson Notes Edit video files in Photoshop using many of the same effects used to edit images. Create a movie from video and image files, Smart Objects, audio files, and Type layers. Similar timeline, tools, features used in other Adobe video editing apps: Premiere Pro, After Effects, Animate Photoshop is not a video editing app with some video editing capabilities. Adobe Premiere Pro is a video editing app with full features and capabilities. Creating a new video project   

Create New button or File menu > New > Film & Video Several presets - this lesson is using HDV/HDTV 720p Workspace > Motion

Tip: Save your file as you work - don’t wait for lesson to tell you when to save Timeline panel = used to assemble and arrange video clips, images, and audio files for a movie file   

Perform standard video-editing tasks Resize the Timeline panel Create Video Timeline button - 2 options video and frame animation o Create Video Timeline (click on button) o 2 default tracks = Layer 0 and Audio Track o Layer 0 - Video menu (icon with down arrow) - Add Media  Import assets = video clips (MP4), images (JPG), audio files (MP3)  Shift + click or Control + click to select more than one file  The order you select the files will be the order the files are imported

Layers in Timeline panel vs. Layers in Layers panel  Delete Layer 0 in Layers panel (not in the Timeline panel)  Still images = purple background  Video clips = blue background  Assets appear in Video Group 1 (click arrow to expand/collapse) See timeline sample image under “About the Timeline panel” in book Layers, play button, playhead, audio track, image file, video clip Playhead location in timeline determines content in the document window Scrubbing = dragging the playhead in the timeline Keep important content within the center area marked by guidelines (Live Area) 

Change the duration in the timeline   

 

Duration = length of a clip measured in seconds and frames (02:25 = 2 seconds 25 frames) Drag Control Timeline Magnification slider to zoom in/out on timeline (slider on bottom of timeline) Change duration - drag right or left edge of a clip or click the arrow in the upper right corner of clip (open Motion panel) to type number (only available for video clips not still images) Changing the duration of a video clip does not change the play speed - it removes part of the clip from the video Arrow next to the clip thumbnail shows attributes

Motion panel - different options for still image and video (zoom, pan & zoom, etc.) Animating text with keyframes      

Keyframe = change in a movie (effects, position, size, style, color) Must have at least 2 keyframes (start of change and end of change) Create a New Video Group from Video Group 1 menu Type tool and click on the canvas (not the timeline) to create a new Type layer Font in the Options bar at the top and Opacity at the top of the Layers panel Stopwatch icon to add a keyframe o Expand the Video Group or click on the Attributes down arrow for list o Stopwatch icon on left of each: Transform, Opacity, Style, Text Wrap o Move playhead to where you want to add a keyframe - 1st keyframe is the starting point of the animation o Keyframe = a yellow diamond in the timeline

Arrow on the left and right side of the yellow diamond next to an attribute - moves to the previous / next keyframe o Move the playhead to where you will add the 2nd keyframe for the ending point of animation o Shift key with the Move tool to keep an object level as it moves o When you make a change (move the type), a 2nd keyframe is automatically added o

Creating effects - adjustment layers, styles, simple transformations   

Adjustment layer applies only to the layer immediately below it in the Layers panel Move playhead to beginning of the clip to add the effect Adjustment panel > Black & White

Adding transitions    

Transition = moves a scene from one shot to the next Drag and drop to add transitions to clips - drag to between clips Transition button in upper left corner of the Timeline panel Click on the transition icon on the clip to select it and drag to resize (shorten or extend the transition duration)

Adding audio       

Can add an audio file to a video file Musical note icon in the Audio Track at the bottom of the Timeline panel > Add Audio Click the + sign at the far-right end of the track in the Timeline panel to add audio Split At Playhead tool (scissors icon) = shorten (cut) a clip Delete a clip = select the clip and press the Delete key Small arrow icon at the right edge of the audio clip for menu options - volume, fade in / out, mute Mute audio in video clips - small triangle at the end of a video clip for menu > Music Notes button for Audio tab to display options > Mute Audio checkbox on

Rendering video    

Rendering = the process of calculating effects in a video editing program to produce a final video output Depending on your computer, this may take several minutes or longer. Render only when you have time. The lesson file is not very large so it may only take a few minutes. File menu > Export > Render Video --OR-- Render Video button in lower left corner of Timeline panel

  

Preset menu with options Working file is .PSD -- the rendered (exported) final file format is .MP4 Business standard is to use H.264 to render and save as a MP4 video file format
