Week 9 Discussion

Question One In the poem, In Response to Executive Order 9066: All Americans of Japanese by Dwight Okita, is based on the true story that Japanese Americans were forced to leave their homes. The narrator is a 14 years-old girl who is reading the executive order that all Japanese Americans have to move into internment camps. She’s trying to prove that she is an average American teenage girl who has no ties with the Japanese. The poem took place around World War II. When Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, everyone was turning against the Japanese Americans. The attack caused the U.S. government to become paranoid that the Japanese Americans were spies and would report to the Japanese government. In the poem, For a Daughter Who Leaves by Janice Mirikitani, it is about a mother getting her daughter ready for her wedding. Her daughter is starting a new life with her husband. The mother is reminiscing about her soon-to-be-married daughter. During the mother’s time period, it was a cultural norm to have bounded feet. In the poem, For a Daughter Who Leaves by Janice Mirikitani, Mirikitani writes, “...dancing on the stones of the yard among yellow butterflies and white breasted sparrows.” This show imagery because the reader could visually picture the scenery. In the poem, In Response to Executive Order 9066: All Americans of Japanese by Dwight Okita, Okita writes, uses the tomato seeds as a symbol to represent the little girl. The tomatoes that she mentioned was another sign that the areas they would be relocating to a place where she's not free to do anything even plant tomatoes....
