Reading Response: Boys Go to Jupiter...

Description

Reading Response: Boys Go to Jupiter by Danielle Evans I liked the descriptions of the places the narrator talked about, like “Burger Boy”. I could visually imagine what the place looked like. When Danielle Evens says, “At nineteen, Jackson is six month older than Claire, but still a senior in high school,” I could infer that Claire is a freshman in college and Jackson was supposed to be in college but failed and didn’t graduate. The point of view is third person. The narrator mainly watched over Claire. The narrator can’t reveal Clair’s thoughts, but followed her actions words. I enjoyed the humor of Claire talking back when she says, “You would know.” From Claire’s actions, like acting out in Florida, letting Jackson take pictures of her in a bikini, and escalating the scandal, she is looking for trouble. I was surprised that I was sympathetic to her. I feel like I have to be and I truly was sympathetic because I know what it’s like to lose a mother. You can either lash out or come to terms with it. She was an unlikeable character, but I felt bad for her. She was self-centered and privileged, and that was truly shown at the end when it said, “She can still be anybody she wants to be.” I liked the many layers of tragedy that created a compelling plot. Evan’s went emotionally deep with Claire’s story. Claire’s actions can be justified considering her past. I think the story’s audience is college students because, other than racism, the theme is people trying to find their place, family functions, and college policies....
