ETHICS ACTIVITY NO.3 REFLECTION PAPER

Write a 500-words reflection paper on Ring of Gyges. Is man by nature selfish?

When I first heard Plato's story, I immediately understood what the shepherd did in the story, which was both unjust and wrong and I thought that was the story but when Plato explained what is the real point of that story and It was there that I realized and understood what Plato was trying to convey in that story, that it has something to do with the nature of being a human in a society, if are we really simply being forced to be ethical because we are afraid of the possible consequences or punishments we might face if we choose to do unethical things, which somehow a difficult question to answer to. Plato's use of characters and stories to address social issues is commendable . It's quite remarkable that the moral questions and discussions of the people to Plato’s work from that era still remain powerful, even to this day. After figuring out what is the exact point of the story's trying to convey, I've come up with a number of concerns about a person's morality, such as what precisely is the reason or what truly motivates people to act ethically and based on my understanding throughout this context, I realized that the only thing that keeps us from acting immorally is the dread of being caught; we act morally not because we want to, but because we have no other option. Hence, for me it seems to be true that if we were really shielded from the consequences of our actions, It has the potential to change the way we act, and there is no doubt about it. In relating to it, Is man by nature really a selfish? According to my interpretation with regards of the story that man by nature is indeed a selfish one. In nature, it reveals that humans are extremely selfish, and that we are willing to harm one another if we believe it would benefit us, we all have things we want in life, but because of the world we live in, it's extremely difficult to do achieve it, especially if you belong to a lower class in a society. My actual point here is that if a person gets the opportunity to achieve what he wants in life with no consequences, he would do everything in his power to take benefit of it, even persons who are known to be honest can commit unfair acts in order to “equalize” inherent inequities by exploiting a bad situation and because of the Hierarchical arrangements it allows us people to gain an unfair edge, undermining the level playing field that we seek in society. Thus, I agreed with the historian-politician John Emerich Edward Dalberg-Acton that "Absolute power corrupts absolutely” which implies that a person becomes corrupt when he or she has authority or power over other people or things. It morally destroys their nature and instills toxic pride in them. If, on the other hand, the person is able to save oneself from this abuse of authority, he or she is modest.
