MILESTONE 1 FINAL PROJECT...

Description

In the Marine Corps, from day one, we have something we called the 14 leadership traits drilled into our heads. These traits include judgement, justice, dependability, initiative, decisiveness, tact, integrity, endurance, bearing, unselfishness, courage, knowledge, loyalty, and enthusiasm (Beddoe, 2013). It might sound like a lot, but these are essentially enduring skills that the organization has deemed to be the most important and useful to becoming the best leader possible. This being said the connection between enduring skills and application to success is not something new to me, but there are a few that stand out that I strive to keep in my daily life for personal and professional growth currently and even after the Marine Corps. These include dependability, endurance, and courage. In my current occupation dependability is extremely important. Like anything when first starting out it is a learning experience and mistakes are going to be made but learning from those mistakes and becoming better has become standard practice. When I was first starting, I was very dependent on my instructor, pushing myself to new limits but always knowing that if I needed something, they were right behind me to answer questions or stop me before I made the wrong decision. I am now in that position of leadership where I am able to instruct others and help them better themselves in a safe situation. Being that factor of dependability has made me realize how important my own education and knowledge are but having the knowledge is not the only thing that matters, being able to communicate it properly is also a big part (Landry, L. 2019, November 19). Personal reflection has made me realize that I am not always the best communicator. While I do not plan on making my concentration communication, taking a basic communication class, such as COM-127, would give me the skills to better present my knowledge to others making myself an even more dependable asset within my current job as well as future endeavors.

Additional classes that would aid in my ability to teach others would be classes such as EDU-515 and EDU-545 both of which involve educators as people in leadership roles. In relation to my SMART goal, endurance might be one of the most obvious skills that will be necessary to achieve my goal. Working toward a bachelor’s degree is not an easy or quick task for anyone. Add in a full-time job and only take two classes at a time and it significantly lengthens the process. Endurance is defined as the power of enduring a difficult process without giving way and for me, this degree is that difficult process. I tend to be a stubborn person and not one that likes failure each being a strength that will help me endure the process of receiving a degree. School work, writing papers, answering questions, and things of that nature are not something I exactly find enjoyable but pushing through each class and learning as much as I can, will pay off in the end. Classes I plan to take to support this skill include a combination of classes I enjoy such as MAT-210 and 211, with classes that I find less interesting and not as enjoyable such as ENG-122 and 123. Everything involving planned academic learning is going to take courage. Might sound weird but after taking several years off of traditional school and being away from the classroom environment the idea of college is scary. Prior education for my current occupation has had a very hands-on learning approach being able to see the direct cause and effect of everything I am doing. Now going back into the classroom environment is tough but a good way to challenge myself. When I first signed up for this class, I thought it would be a nice easy introduction to college and a good way to learn how to use the system and reacquaint myself with schoolwork. After just 3 weeks, the class has met my expectations in that sense but has taken a lot more courage than I expected. Thinking about my future and my specific goals is not something I am exactly good at, but this class has forced me to assess my current position and think about what I

want in the future which I normally shy away from. In addition to this class, courses related to my concentration will also take courage such as CJ-112 and CJ-120 which are a direct representation of my chosen concentration. All this being said about planning my academic career and choosing courses that would facilitate these skills, focusing on my current job and learning as much as I can, will also continue to create a base of dependability, endurance, and courage that will carry over into the future personal and professional experiences.
