Introduction Mary’s Closet is a brick and mortar store that specializes in designer clothing, shoes, and handbags. The store has a basic website that has a few items listed to view, however they do not have online sales capability. In today’s world, online sales are a major part of any retail or clothing business. For example, at Nordstrom, for this year so far online sales made up 30% of revenue or $3.33 billion. In store sales for Nordstrom have been declining about 1% year over year, yet the net profit for the company continues to rise. (Digital Commerce 360, 2018) Problem Statement When considering the competitors in this market such as Nordstrom Rack, it would be hard to compete in sales with them without having the ability to make sales online. The main problem that Mary’s Closet faces today is the lack of technology to roll out a new e-commerce plan which would involve the ability to integrate online sales, manage inventory and shipping, order status checks and payment processing all without sacrificing the brick and mortar store itself. The implementation of these programs to the business will take the integration of some new technologies.

Two Technologies Cloud computing is one technology that would be beneficial to Mary’s Closet. It could allow users to utilize a network of remote servers all over the internet to help manage, store and process the information. The fast-moving nature of the retail industry demands new mobile ecommerce solutions, analytic packages, or new functionalities that can be deployed easily and quickly. (Dhaval, 2017) Cloud computing could also provide a form of security for the business.

Having the information stored on a remote server helps safeguard against having a network failure or a single server crash ruin the entire operation.

Intelligent systems are another technology that would greatly improve the online shopping capabilities of the store. With intelligent systems, you can target potential customers by using software that can see what products have been viewed the longest by certain customers and stored until they visit the site again. (Asling,) Also by improving recommendations to customers based on their product views. Using systems such as artificial intelligence can greatly improve any online sales system.

Business Requirements Objectives In order to stay competitive with the rival companies, it is the main objective to set up an online shopping option to increase sales and revenue. Mary’s Closet currently only has a basic website that doesn’t offer the ability to purchase goods online. Changing this to be able to show all available products and the option to purchase right then and there is paramount to the store’s success. However, it is imperative that this is done efficiently and safely for all customers. This is where technology such as cloud computing and intelligent systems come into play. As mentioned earlier, cloud computing can be an effective way to ensure that there are no system crashes and that all data is not stored in one location. This makes it easier to share data with others that are working with the company. Intelligent Systems can also be utilized to help target potential

customers and also help with the security of the website. By using these technologies and giving the website a complete overhaul, I think that Mary’s Closet will be able to compete with the other rival stores.

Project Description For Mary’s Closet to achieve the goal integrating an online sales aspect to their brick and mortar business, there will have to be some new technologies involved in order to ensure its success. After this project is put into action, the end result should be an e-commerce website that can supplement the brick and mortar store so that Mary’s Closet can compete with the other stores. It will be important for the business owner to implement new technologies that are not currently in use.

Technology Requirements The new technologies, software and hardware, that will need to be implemented will have to be capable of doing a host of different tasks, such as, Integrate online shopping, manage inventory and shipping, provide order status checking and online payment processing, facilitate collaboration internally and externally with staff and customers, manage customer contacts, provide reporting and manage the current brick-and-mortar processes.

Competitors and Technology Mary’s Closet has many competitors in the market but none maybe as established as Macy’s. Founded in 1858, Macy’s owns and operates over 680 stores including its affiliate stores

like Bloomingdale’s, Blue Mercury and Macy’s Backstage. Also, through Macy’s.com, it serves millions of customers across more than 100 countries. Another competitor in this market is Zappos. The company launched in 2001 and was acquired by Amazon in 2009 for $1.2 billion. Zappos was an e-commerce player in the beginning but then had some trouble with having such a large inventory and customers had problems navigating through all of it.

Cloud Computing Starting in 2015, Macy’s teamed up with Google to utilize Google’s cloud computing service for data warehousing and analytics solutions. It has streamlined retail operational functions across its network. Macy’s is calling on the scalability of the Google cloud to certify that the opening of its new 675,000 square foot distribution center has the technology to ensure that merchandise is accurately and efficiently received, sorted, ticketed, packed and shipped form the distribution center to the stores. (Kurian, 2019). Intelligent Systems Zappos then turned to technology and adopted some intelligent systems and through the use of artificial intelligence and genetic algorithms that were able to pick up on key words and adapt to coming trends in fashion. This made the website much easier to navigate and brought customer to products easier. This is an example of what Zappos, which is an online only store, is making online shopping easier and more efficient.

Technology Benefit

After looking into what other companies are doing by using technology to increase sales online, it is believed that the same can be done for Mary’s Closet. By using cloud computing to help with the logistics of buying and selling goods, while also ensuring that those goods are shipped to the right destination in a timely manner. When talking about intelligent systems, retailer like Zappos have used them to make the product search process easier and more efficient. When people are shopping online, it doesn’t take long for them to leave a site to go to another if they feel like they are not finding the specific product fast enough. By adopting this system we can attract the customers in and make sure they find what they want to buy.

Technology Solutions In order for Mary’s Closet to incorporate the new ecommerce website, there will need to be a couple of technology solutions adapted. After reviewing the decision matrix, it was determined that two technologies that were most needed would be Intelligent systems and could computing. Both will help tremendously with the implementation of the new website while covering certain key areas such as integrate online shopping, manage inventory and shipping, provide order status checking and online payment processing, facilitate collaboration internally and externally with staff and customers, manage customer contacts, provide reporting and manage the current brick-and-mortar processes.

Technology One Intelligent Systems would meet a lot of the requirements for the business. It will help with inventory management, as well as track shipping and help with payment processing. Intelligent systems can help the brick and mortar store with much the same problems like inventory tracking and other services such as payroll and managing customer contact information for rewards members. One area where there may be a gap is in the cost of these systems. Also, there is no improvement with experience such as there is with humans.

Technology Two Cloud computing is another solution that may be helpful for the business by providing a centralized area to store all the data form the company and making it easier to share with the main store. If there is ever a problem with the brick and mortar store, the information can be pulled from the could based system and the company may not have to struggle to get the information. Recommendations In order for Mary’s Closet to have a successful online ecommerce site, without sacrificing the brick and mortar store, Intelligent systems would be the technology solution that would be most recommended. With any online store, some challenges could be the fact that the customer is not physically in the store to see merchandise and get a good look and feel of it. Many times, what is received in the mail is not what was expected. To solve this, intelligent systems can take product descriptions and user feedback and reviews and give a more accurate description of the

product. Customers will be more satisfied with there purchase and more sales will not be returned.

Overall Benefit The overall benefit of intelligent systems to the company can be seen in many ways, one way is by enhancing the efficiency of the business. With intelligent systems it can make the financial reporting and analysis of sales process more efficient. One of the biggest ways it can benefit now and in the future is in the overall customer experience. Trying to have the brick and mortar experience while shopping online is tough but not impossible. With these systems, you can set up videos with particular items being worn, have customer feedback and reviews and also show inventory available to the customer. Any advantage over the competitors in this market is a good advantage and with intelligent systems it should be a good advantage.
