2-2 Final Project Milestone 1: Introduction & Peer Review By: Jayme Fuller MAT 133: Introduction to Statistical Analysis Southern New Hampshire University

Research Study: The research I have chosen to do for my milestone is Children’s recognition of emotion in music and speech written by Dianna Vidas, Genevieve A Dingle, and Nicole L Nelson.

I. Identify the specific focus of the research: The study was focused on the sound cues that transfer emotion in speech and if they are similar to those that convey emotion in music and acknowledge the emotions in both these types of cue recruits overlap networks in the brain.

II. Describe the specific characteristics of the population: The population in this study was they asked 60 children ages 6 to 11 years old and 51 university students to judge emotions from different musical excerpts, inflected speech clips and affected burst clips. They presented different emotions that would have the same effect as happy, sad, angry, fear and pride. Each one of these emotions were presented twice.

III. Evaluate the research question: The question for this research was did the acoustic cues that convey emotion in speech are similar to those that convey emotion in music? After they did a research on this study, they came the conclusion that there was recognition of emotion in music. When they presented each and had each person judge them, they found that sadness was the easiest to recognize and happiness followed right behind that. The children that were years and older showed adult-like response.
