Jake Spear Mr. Gabriel Alaniz IT-200 20 September 2020 3-2 Activity: Network Configuration Model 1. Define the following IT concepts, and describe their role and important within a network:

IP Address and DNS: An IP address is a unique address that identifies a device on the Internet or a local network. It allows a system to be recognized by other systems connected via the Internet protocol. (Christensson). A DNS, or Doman Name System, is the system the internet uses to convert alphabetical characters into a numerical IP addresses. If you were to forgo DNS, you would have to figure out the IP address of each and every website you’d like to go to and remember the exact IP address to access their content. Server and Client: A server is a computer that provides data to other computers. It may serve data to systems on a local area network or a wide area network over the Internet. (Christensson). A client is a desktop, laptop, smartphone or tablet that sends or receives data from a server in a network. (PCMag) VPN: A VPN, or “Virtual Private Network” is an encrypted connection to the Internet. It is used to provide anonymity by tunneling a private channel through a public network. (PCMag) Firewall: A firewall serves as a barrier between a trusted system or network and outside connections, such as the Internet. Trusted connections are allowed through the firewall and outside connections are blocked unless you allow them access through your firewall. LAN and WAN: LAN, or “Local Area Network”, is a network of connected devices that exist with a specific location. An example of a LAN is a home network that connects to a single router. (Christensson). A WAN, or “Wide Area Network”, is similar to a LAN but much bigger. Unlike LANs, WANs are not limited to a specific location. An example of a WAN is the Internet, which is considered to be the biggest WAN in the world. (Christensson)

2. Choose one of the following scenarios and create a network configuration diagram in Microsoft Visio using either the Basic Network Diagram or Detailed Network Diagram symbol sets. My choice is Justin Altuve’s small photography business out of his home. He connects to the internet through a cable modem connected to a wireless router. For information security, he uses a firewall. On his network, he has a desktop PC, a laptop, an IP phone, and a printer. He uses a digital camera that he regularly syncs with his laptop.

The scenario I chose was Justin’s Altuve’s home photography business. His internet sends data through his modem which then connects through his wireless router. After this, it goes through his firewall where all the data is filtered through and anything suspicious is stopped in its’ tracks. The data that is allowed through the firewall travels to both the wireless access point that his laptop is connected to, and the switch that his PC, IP phone and printer are connected to. His laptop is connected to the wireless access point because if he has both a laptop and a desktop PC, he wants to be able to move freely when he is using the laptop and also while he is syncing

wirelessly from his digital camera. It would not make sense to hardwire a mobile device when there are better uses in that situation. The switch used in the diagram above is a smart choice for him as he has multiple devices connecting into a single router. By using one, it gives him more bandwidth and ultimately faster speeds to upload his work, process customer orders and take phone calls.
