Description

Jordan Croes ENG-122

When taking a closer look at the author’s claim, according to Sedaris, “Understanding doesn't mean that you can suddenly speak the language. Far from it. It's a small step, nothing more, yet its rewards are intoxicating and deceptive.”(Sedaris, 2000). This could be the author's allegation; he claims that once he understood the language, he still had one problem: he wanted to speak it, but getting there would take a lot longer, and the rewards would be toxic and embarrassing because of his teacher. I can gain a far greater perspective and point of view of what the writer is trying to express through his writing, as well as the style and tone he is using while doing all of the above. The author wants his audience to realize that when confronted with a circumstance like this, it will not be easy due to the possible insults, but that in the end, the benefits of learning a foreign language would exceed the downsides. The author's objective is reinforced through important points in the writing. The first key point is when he describes the first day of class and indicates that many of his students speak French fluently. He also mentions that he is 41 years old and that his peers are all young and full of confidence. He's attempting to draw a distinction between himself and his peers. The author discusses his past life experiences and his limited knowledge of the French language, then continues on to say that he barely understands half of what the teacher is saying in French, which is the second key point. In the third key element, the author explains how the teacher tries to minimize each student. The author tells how the teacher tries to humiliate everyone when they answer a question, which is the third key point. The author proceeds to detail all of the difficulties he is facing. The author's target audience for this article is students of all ages who are studying or

have studied abroad and are learning a foreign language while simultaneously being exposed to a foreign environment, or those who have felt uncomfortable in a new place. The author attempts to address his audience by recounting his experiences in a helpless manner while remaining humorous at times. While attempting to establish a connection with students or previous students in order to familiarize them with what the author is trying to communicate, the author makes a variety of decisions. The author begins the piece by discussing his personal experiences, which he shares completely openly. He can easily build a connection with the targeted audience by being honest. The author makes several references to students' perceptions of teachers as being challenging. With the hilarious tone in which he chooses to write the article, the author also tries to connect with the targeted audience. After evaluating the author's claim, I have come to the conclusion that it's a strong one, because nothing in the actual world ever comes easy. Rewards, according to the article's author, can be toxic and deceptive at times. However, you must seek for the positive side of the situation in this deception. The negatives are also mocked by the author, who makes jokes about them. While humorous, it can make it difficult for the reader to fully comprehend what the author is trying to say....
