Eric DeJesus English 122: Composition 1 2-5 Assignment: Journal: Importance of Analysis Me Talk Pretty One Day by David Sedaris recounts the author's journey to Paris to learn a new language later in life. Sedaris uses a witty and ironic tone combined with an informal and conversational style that by the end of the piece is excited and hopeful. The author's purpose is to share his personal story and experiences. Through this analysis, I feel like I’m seeing a piece of the author's personality. Sedaris is funny and engaging with a keen sense of irony. The style and tone are very relatable. The author's insecurity, which can be seen in how he describes others positively and himself negatively is shown when recounts his first day, “they were all young, attractive, and well dressed, causing me to feel not unlike Pa Kettle trapped backstage after a fashion show”. A close analysis allows the reader to get a deeper understanding of the author's story. As I analyzed the piece the more my understanding of the author changed. I was able to glean more context and get a deeper comprehension of the author’s message. By looking deeper, the reader can understand more than the surface humor. As I applied the analysis each read through gave me new insights. Looking deeper you can see the pain, insecurity, and trepidation that drives his humor. Sedaris’ writing is effective for achieving his purpose. He uses humor and anecdotal stories to engage the reader. The first-person conversational style works well and allows the reader to relate and empathize. The reader is drawn in immediately by the author's insecurity and nervousness. Sedaris describes easily relatable experiences, even if the reader hasn’t had the

experience of learning a new language or being in a foreign country. The struggle to step outside your comfort zone and learn something new and finally the joy in realizing you are succeeding is something any reader can appreciate....
